Dean Wu’s story about why he started raising money for Allergy and Asthma Research. “Throughout my life, I have been dealing with severe food allergies and it has not been easy. On birthdays, I cannot eat cake or ice cream. I always must carry my Epi-Pen and inhaler in case I have a life-threatening allergic reaction. I rarely ate out and rarely traveled. But thanks to a clinical trial conducted by Dr. Kari Nadeau at the Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research at Stanford University, I am now able to tolerate some of my allergens.

Although I still must take an Epi-Pen and inhaler with me everywhere I go, completing this trial has changed my life. I am now able to eat out with my friends and family and travel more freely. Participating in the trial also allowed me to discover my passion for fishing!

Because I have gained so much from participating in this study, I want to help further the amazing research being done at the Sehan N. Parker Center by organizing a fundraiser event.

I went on my first fishing trip in 4th grade when my friends invited me to go ocean fishing. My dad caught on to the fact that I enjoyed fishing and proposed the idea of trying bass fishing. A few months later, I went on a guided trip with Paul Bailey, and I immediately fell in love with the excitement and complexity of bass fishing. Now, I kayak fish with my dad, and try my best to compete in as many tournaments as possible that don’t occur during the school year.

This year will be my third fundraiser tournament, and I am blown away every year by the generosity and support from the fishing community. Both anglers and numerous companies have generously donated items for my cause. Companies like Native Watercraft have even gone so far to offer me a pro staff position because they really value giving back to the community. I am honored to be a part of such a supportive group of anglers who are at the forefront of kayak fishing and design."

Dean Wu has raised $13,500 in 2021 for the Allergy and Asthma Research, in 2022 he raised $26,752, and in 2023 just in donations, he has raised $10,000. At Clear Lake on September 23, 2023, please sign up for the kayak tournament through TourneyX. Please check out their web site:Foodallergybasstournament.com
