SPO Part deux Fiasco???? Maybe

Post by Fast Eddie »

Out at second flight, took almost 35 minutes to get to primary spot. Same guys a s yesterday making the rounds. Pull up and catch a 1 1/2 lbr then Ric catches 2 more. After about an hour Ric says lets go check open water in current. I asked are you sure? he affirms. We tell the other team we'll be back "the quality just isn't there" and off we go. Catch several more in open water with current, a little bigger, but not by much. 30-45 minutes have passed and we decided to go back to the spot. As the other team is making the round near us we inquire as to how they are doing. When we left they had 1 fish about 1 lb. Now they tell us shortly after we left as they were making the swing the window opened and they caught 2 over 5 1/2 almost back to back. (they actually won the amateur side with over 12 lbs and change). Ric and I look at each other and just shake our heads. Timing is everything. Getting late so off to the final spot, missed a giant when we first arrive, culled once more and off to the weigh in 764, 24th place. While Ric retrieves the trailer, I call the wife. Load the boat onto the trailer and we say adios. I go to enjoy the weigh in. Stop and talk with Mario and Lewis. Off to the picnic table and while watching the weigh in I decide to take a few pictures.................except my phone is not in my pocket. Its in Ric's boat. Holy Crap, he's been gone for about 30 minutes. So of course every pokey driver in the world is on the road. Heart is pounding as I already had 1 Galaxy phone stolen, and now this. My wife is going to put me in the tent for the next 12 years. As I cautiously drive down the Byron highway, I see Ric has stopped at the Valero station. I pull in and am lucky to find my phone sitting in the 100+ degree sun. Ric was surprised to see me. The odds of me catching him and not loosing the phone are pretty astronomical but someone was looki9ng out for my stupidity. So was leaving the fish a fiasco, How about the phone. Could have been a disaster, but all worked out.

Hinde sight is 20/20 it's not like you had the bige bites on day 1 on that spot and you guys were catching the same 1.5lb fish - you felt like you had to move to upgrade and didn't have the confidence in the spot to throw down 2 5lbers - that's fishin' we live and die by our moment to moment decisions. Sounds like fortune shifted back your way at the end of the day so your wife didn't have to pitch a tent.

Great recap- I appreciate your stories.

Knowing when to hold em or fold em is the difference between winning and losing!

So true and on the river it is everything a spot can be fire for 30 minutes and then nothing you have to have the utmost confidence in a spot to be there and ready during that golden window of the switch. The way the river is fishing this year it's easy to second-guess yourself.

You put your money down and complete in a bass derby, the time is restricted to event hours and your time to start is a drawn number. You get a early draw it’s possible to arrive at your #1 spot, a late draw changes where you start. This is the 1st decision where to start. Every decision makes a difference, you guess right and earn a chech, wrong it’s second guessing why you failed.
