Lake El Capitan is in San Diego County, California. El Capitan has 1562 surface acres with 22 miles of shoreline and a water storage capacity of a little over 112,800-acre feet. El Capitan has very specific rules when it comes to pleasure boating, only from May to October is when water skiing, wakeboarding and personal watercrafts are allowed; however, fishing is yearlong. Be sure to check their web site before heading to the lake because they are only open Friday to Tuesday and closed Wednesday and Thursday plus most holidays. El Capitan is known for its huge population of big largemouth bass but during the most recent So Cal Kayak Anglers the lake did not show its true potential with only 4 limits out of 49 anglers. However, Brandon Cabrales was able to find the key to unlock the door and submitted a total of 84.00” besting second place by a colossal 6.25”. Cabrales stated it was tough because the water level had dropped several feet in just a few weeks. He found a magical location on an island point with his drop-shot rig. After a few hours on the island point, he had managed to catch three keepers.

“I caught all my fish on a drop-shot rig with a 6” Robo worm in the Margarita color.” Cabrales said, “I tried several different areas but decided to return to his island point.”

After returning to his first location, he found fish were biting and filled his limit. There was a bass boat at the end of the point, they were catching fish after fish. Cabrales had to sit and wait until they left to fish that magical spot.

“About 12:45 I had my limit, I just casted around the point catching fish.” said Cabrales, “I was casting out to deep water and working my drop-shot uphill.”

“The bass boat was leaving and waved me over to fish the hot spot.” said Cabrales, “Once I drifted to that hot spot, I caught a fish about every other cast, I was in the middle of the juice.”

“It was crazy the last hour of the day.”

The last hour Cabrales culled up several inches on that magical spot. As he worked his drop-shot rig uphill, his line would just get tight and there would be a fish. Cabrales thanked his wife and his kids for all their support with his parents for all their support.
