It's possible that the one's you "Lost" were actually the fish coming up and Bumping the bait to kill or stun it. I've had them do that more than a few times. Once I figured it out, I'd start giving some slack when I felt the bump, and then they would HAMMER the bait. Might work for you too. Can't hurt to try !!

100% I could feel him hooked and I just ripped it out of his mouth, I need to remember not to set the hook.
