Yak-a-Bass held their first event at Lake Folsom. The weather was perfect with cloud cover and a slight breeze. Later in the day, the clouds drizzled some light rain on the anglers, but it wasn’t bad enough to get everyone wet. Anglers found fishing great with mixed bags of spotted bass, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass. Once again, records were broken by Daniel Balaba with an impressive 97.50” or around 22-pounds of bass. Balaba’s nice limit also had big fish of the event that measured 22.25” which was a largemouth bass.

“I practiced fishing the day before and found two rock piles that were holding some nice fish.” said Balaba, “The rock piles were close to some points that lead to spawning areas that had a creek channel that separated the points.”

“The two rock piles were only a few hundred yards from each other.” remarked Balaba, “In the morning, I scooped the rock piles and did not see any fish on them.”

“I did see some roamers that were suspended in about 10-feet of water and was able to catch them.” stated Balaba, “I was using the Z-man 4” jerk shad with a ¼ ounce jig hook. I mid strolled most of them.”

“I did catch one nice fish on a Neko 4” fat worm Senko.” said Balaba, “I kept hitting rock piles around the same area and caught several fish that didn’t help. I had my limit by 11 AM.”

“My big fish fell to my strolling bait. I casted near the big fish that was in about 10-feet of water suspended and it hit my lure.” exclaimed Balaba, “I was fishing 30 to 45-feet of water on the rock piles with the Neko and Ned rig to catch a couple of my limit fish.”

Balaba thanked his wife for being so supportive in the sport that I love to do, Yak-a-Bass crew for hosting these events and all the anglers that came out and competed in the event.

Reed Frazier finished in second place with 92.00” which is around 17.50 pounds. Frazier used the Crush City Mooch minnow paired with a 3/32-ounce head mid strolled to catch his second-place fish.

“Once again, I used the Crush City Mooch minnow paired with a 3/32-ounce head to catch my fish.” mentioned Frazier, “My bigger fish were roaming by themselves or with two other fish.”

“I was fishing in 15 to 25 feet of water for the suspended fish.” articulated Frazier, “I was also fishing rock piles near spawning coves that were secondary points. The fish seemed to be relating to the secondary points more than the main lake points.”

“I locked down in one spot because of the boat traffic in the area but during practice I was able to move around more.” declared Frazier, “Early in the morning, there were around 5 to 6 fish that were roaming around feeding in about 10-feet of water above the rock piles.”

“Those fish in the wolf pack were easy to catch but once it got to around 11 AM the fishing became tougher.” said Frazier.

Fraizer thanked Yak-a-Bass for hosting great events for the anglers.

Simon Her placed third with a total of 85.75”. He did not practice before the event and decided to fish his strengths.

“My targets were secondary points that lead to spawning coves.” claimed Her, “I was using my forward-facing electronics to find rock piles on the secondary points.”

“I would pick each rock pile apart; I would use a reaction bait to get the fish to eat but what really worked with the Crush City Mooch minnow.” pronounced Her, “I would mid stroll above the rocks and also target single roaming fish that were above the rock piles.”

“My reaction bait was a Mega Bass plus 2 sinking rip bait. This bait would draw numbers but would only catch smaller fish.” voiced Her, “The Mooch minnow caught the larger fish, so I just kept that rod in my hand the rest of the day.”

“My main spot that I wanted to start at a fellow kayaker beat me to that spot, so I started on a different location and caught one of the 19” that helped my limit.” replied Her, “Most of my fish came in the 10 to 25-feet of water.”

“The fish that were willing to bite were in the 10 to 25-feet of water, the deeper fish in 30 to 40-feet of water really didn’t want to bite.” said Her.

Her a man of faith thanked God for his grace and love to help him find the fish he did. Also, Pline, First Gen fishing and friends and family that support me. Also, James and his crew that run Yak-a-Bass, as always, for the fun event.
