CLUBS W/ DRAW FORMAT - NEED YOUR HELP!! (Please!!)
Subject: Numbers of boaters and non-boaters not equal.
Our club, Modesto Castmasters, also has a "draw" format and is currently reviewing the rules and policies regarding "extra" non-boaters. That is, more non-boaters than boaters when the draw is undertaken.
How does your club handle this situation?
Specifically, if you allow three to a boat, how do you handle the division of awards? And, do you operate the tournaments with any sort of handicap for those boats that include three anglers?
I value your responses. Thank you in advance.

In the Sacramento Bass Wranglers club, we rarely run into this situation. But our policy in the past has been that the members (non-boaters) with the most senority get the ride. But then we work to find an additional boater to even things up (i.e. we call up a member that hasn't shown up for a while, etc). Plus since we've gone to the "pay by the tournament" format, we can also invite prospective members/boaters to participate...the policy change has given us some additional flexibility.
This might not work in some clubs that are very points/competition oriented, but our club is very laid back and more like a bunch of friends just getting together to fish nine times a year.
We've been very fortunate in that we actually have a good number of boaters and haven't had to deal with the "three to the boat" scenerio as of yet.
hope this helps,

We have two thing going for us that help it work out.
First, we have individual weights, so it doesn't matter how many folks are in the boat.
Like Greg, we have the flexability to invite prospective members as well. That sometimes helps.
When we do end up with an extra non-boater, we put the extra guy with the biggest boats first.

Re: Thanks!! How About Rewards When Weights Are Shared??*NM
Richard,
I personally like the three in a boat deal that we offer. It does keep us fom leaving anyone behind, and I think thats important. I tried to introduce individual weights to the club a couple of years ago, not for every event, but maybe a couple for the entire year and the club voted against it which was fine. I think that if you do have a third in the boat, let that person fish as their own team, that way there's no discussion about 3 versus 2 isn't fair. As for a payout, someone in the club had a great idea. For those boaters that don't draw a partner and have to fish alone out of there boat, and the non boaters that dont draw a boater and end up third in a boat, dont have them pay the full tournament fee of $50.00, let them pay half the entry fee, and if they win or place in the money, they would only be eligible to win half since they only payed half.
So you'll still allow 3 in a boat, but the 3rd person is on their own team fishing for their own fish. If there isn't a boat available to take out the non boater in question, then that person will be resposible to find their own ride.

To coin a phrase from that bar down the road from Russo’s, our club has been described as a “little drinking club with a fishing problemâ€

the way our club does it is this..
the extra non-boater though he may not get to fish one event in first in line for a boat in the next event.. and thus could never be excluded from 2 events in a row..
however at our last club tourny we had 6 boaters and 1 non-boater so two boaters had to leave their boats at home..

Qustion for you Rob
First off, thanks for responding.
I'm curious to know if the boaters have a problem with leaving their boat at home. A friend told me a few years back that a club he was in would also make the "alone" boaters pair up, forcing them to leave their rigs home, which basically took this club down the drain with the boaters. They felt if they purchased a 35+ thousand dollar boat, they should be able to fish, regardless of a non boater being drawn or not. Most every club that I can think of doesn't force the boater to leave his boat home anymore, I think the Federation events do and I know a few guys weren't happy when they didnt have a sign up partner and had to leave there boats behind.
Does any other club here in California do this? I think if I were a boater, I wouldn't fish with a club that forced that.
Catch a big one,

I might as well make the final call.
Leave my boat @ home, no there'll be one less person fishing and it's time to find another club.
Tell me that I have to take the third person because of the bigger boat then the club can pay for the rental of the boat. My names on the papper work for the rig not the clubs. Oh and yes it's time to move on to another club.
Handy cap the three to the boat more and there will be one less non boater going out, that should help with the learning club theory. Might be time to move on, If I'm going to be competeing might as well be for bigger pay outs.
Make the thrid person a team by themself, thell be fishing alot deepr than me get the lead core out.
Richard if you turely want ny complete opion on this then give me a call or e mail me.

Re: Qustion for you Rob
Our club has several boaters that have no problem being non-boaters. Being a boater is sometimes over-rated. As a rule, we do not allow single boaters to go out alone. First, it’s a safety thing; secondly, we have a team format; and last-but-not-least - several years back there was a guy in this club that would show up at meeting after the draw, or show up on at the ramp tournament morning and ask to join the tournament. (he couldn’t make the meeting for some reason) It was overheard that he did that because didn’t want to show anyone his water or how he was catching the fish.
Before I joined this club, I talked to a few people (boaters) some with, and some who had quit. We’re a club and we just want to go fishin’ here, we’re not trying to make house payments.
