Giving away boat.... DMV questions ?

Post by Fish Chris »

I'm about to give my old boat, to a young fishing buddy who can really use it. I just have no place to store it, and he has a nice back yard space, behind a double gate. The stipulation is that I can still use it at a place or two that don't allow gas motors (the motor on my new boat would be WAY too much work to take off and on) and also, maybe a little bit in the Saltwater (just won't put my new baby in that corrosive darn stuff).

So anyway, can I just flat sign the pink slip over to him, call it a gift, and most importantly, NEVER have to go to the DMV ? My buddy sure better hope so ;-)

Anything I'm overlooking here ?

Thank you,
Fish

PS, I put quite a bit of thought into this, and I decided that I would really rather "give it away" to a buddy who I know I can use it (plus still maybe use it a bit myself) :-) than to see it for a few hundred bucks, and never see it again..... I really do have a soft spot in my heart for that little ol' tin can :-)

I know with a car you just can't give it to a friend as a gift so I suspect a boat will be the same. If the person is a relative then you can.

I would just make a bill of sale out for $50. He will have to pay sales tax and transfer fees that will total around $15-$20.

If nothing else sell it for a dollar. You will need to sign over the pink slip/s. They will be different for the boat and trailer if there is one. Then you will need to fill out a release of liability form and send it in. The forms and more info is available on the DMV web site.

For a non-relative you have to sell it. The minmum is one dollar. As was said already, you sign it off, fill out and sign the liability release and put the purchase price there as well and mail it in. He's gotta do the DMV thing and all he has to do is mail in the pinks with a check for sales tax and transfer fees (I think it's $15 for th boat and $7 for the trailer). It'll likey have to be a dollar each for the boat and the trailer.

So with the places you go that don't allow gas motors, does the motor have to be off the boat or can it just be tillted up and out (with maybe the prop taken off)?

I've only been to one "no gas" lake and all we had to do was to trim it up out of the water (although I cheated with the skeg in to help with steering stability!).

It's pretty easy to do in person at most AAA offices - as a bonus, there's almost always no waiting. They'll make sure that all the paperwork is OK, and will have all the appropriate forms. You will need the pink slip or other proof of ownership and a current registration.
BTW - nice gesture!
