Wacky Rig Hook....

Post by Hollywood »

Just curious to what everyone is using back in the states to wacky rig there baits?

I have been using a Zappu wedless jib head and Gamakatsu #29 Size 2.

I don't know if the Gama #29 is available in the states or not.

Gamakatsu G-Lock 1/0 hooks have been working best for me for the most part. Then if I need to upsize or downsize the hook I go to a size 1 or 2/0. For the most part the 1/0 works best for me. In the states you can also purchase the 25 pack of hooks which seems to hold me over for some time.

I was using the WW Hook with the tied on weed guard, but had some problems with breaking the hook.

I have used the hooks that have the built on weedguards and I like some of them and I don't like others. There are a few with a think mono guard on it and those seem to work just fine.

I really like the Gamakatsu #29 and I have yet to break one off and I am usually throwing it on 16lb Bass Seil line and a heavy Evergreen rod to cover. If I get it snagged the hook will bed straight or the structure will break before the hook breaks itself or my line does.

Are the #29 available in the states?

They probably sell it under a different name. Can you send me a link to the http://www.gamakatsu.co.jp website with the link for the #29? This way I can see a picture and tell you if there is a US counterpart?

Here's the link to basspro.com for the G-Lock hooks that I use. They sell the 25 pack for $10.99 plus s/h.

Also what size bait are you using? I use the G-Lock 1/0 for cuttail senkos or baits of that size. For smaller baits I usually go with dropshot hooks or something more suited for that size fish (roboworm fat worms, zoom finesse worms, etc). In the Delta and Clear Lake those size hooks easily straighten out and I opt for the G-Lock hook instead. On the Delta I'm typically using 12lb - 15lb Yo-Zuri based on the conditions (water clarity, fishing pressure, etc).

I used to use the Finesse Wide Gap hook but lost a lot of fish on it. I know it works well with fishing heavy cover as the hook is so small, but found that I prefered the straight shank on the g-lock hook -- much more hook penetration. Also I've experimented with tying my own weed guard on the G-Lock, but found that many times I didn't need it unless fishing really heavy grass/tulies.

Opps I meant to say 39. Gamakatsu #39 size 2. I have never lost a fish on them.

I dont like the G-Lock hooks, used them many years ago and lost many fish...

I either use a 4/0 or 5/0 Gammie straight shank. Another one I use is a Sugio Yamamoto number 4. Its a circle type hook, and they pretty weedless without a weed guard.

Too much information in the pic. :)

Some things work because very few people are presenting the bait in that exact manner.

I dont have the time to tie anything on to them so if I need a weed guard I will buy the hooks with them on them already but those arnt gamakatsu they are another brand which i have had good success with. I will see if I can find some of them to shoot and post here later.
