Side Imaging Sonar

Sieg has the new Hummingbird, still checking it out. But he mostly uses it to check out girls swimming off their docks.....dirty old man!!! He sounded impressed with it last time I talked to him.

Does the sidescan really show the kind of detail in real life that the promos show? It looks too good to be true.

Could you take a picture with your digital camera of some sort of structure next time your out. I'm curious to see if the sidescan sonar is a accurate as the images on their website.

I don't know about the Humminbird units but I tried an older version put out by Raytheon and was less than impressed.

The problem as I saw it was that by its very nature a sonar beam sends back only one dimensional signals - object distance from the source of the beam. This becomes problematic for side-scanning sonars because traditional sonar beams are so narrow that only a small region of the side is hit by the beam. The solution to this is to use multple beams or a moving beam. There is a company called Interphase that sells a moving beam side scanner, but they target mostly the saltwater market. I believe the humminbird unit uses an extra wide beam, but I honestly don't understand how that would solve the problem unless there is more than one receiver. If any of you electronics experts out there know the answer I'm all ears.

I have seen the pictures from the Humminbird units and am very impressed.
