To Foil or not to Foil

Post by Smile_n_Jax »

Ok, so I got a gift certificate to BassProShops and I'm running around like a kid in a candy shop.:D

During my surfing, something pops up about hydrofoils, so I go looking. Granted, they all offer miracles in speed and handling. Just wondering if one will really help my boat, an '89 Stratos 269V with a 90HP Yamaha. Not necessarily looking for speed, but thinking it would help with stability. Got into some heavy water a while back, about 1 foot swells, and it was pretty scary and I got hella wet.

So, the question is, will one help my boat and, if so, what's a good one to get? BTW, my motor runs a 13 1/4 X 17 prop which was put on by C&C.

I know two guys running this type of product on their boat. One is on a 120 Force and the other is on a 150 Black Max. Both say very good things about the planing time, speed, and handling.

I recommend going with the hydrofoil (stingray), especially on a 90 horse. It'll help get you on the plane faster and it will help with stability. I have put foils on all of the motors I have owned and I have yet to take one off. I even put a foil on 15 horse that I run on a 12 foot tadpole and it took it from a squirrelly sluggish ride to a nice smooth plane.

Good luck,

I got a bayliner capri with an 85 force and it definatly got on plane quicker with the stingray foil on. i dont think it helps as much to a bass boat with a flatter bottom. With the deeper hull and less torque with a smaller motor I think it is more effective.

My dad put one on his 1984 SlingShot Bass Boat with a Yamaha Pro-V 150. It definitely gets on plane quicker and you can stay on plane at much slower speeds. He also said it makes steering easier for him.
