I wonder if they did any ice fishing in spare time

Post by Jim Conlow Sr. »

Weather Bulletin -Colorado

Denver News

This text is from a county emergency manager out in the western part of Jefferson County after a snowstorm.

WEATHER BULLETIN

Up here, in the Northern Plains, we just recovered from a Historic event--- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands.

FYI:

George Bush did not come.

FEMA did nothing.

No one howled for the government.

No one blamed the government.

No one even uttered an expletive on TV.

Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.

Our Mayor did not blame Bush or anyone else.

Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else either.

CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snowstorm.

Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.

No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House.

No one looted.

Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something.

Nobody expected the government to do anything, either.

No Larry King, No Bill O'Reilly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera.

No Sean Penn, No Barbera Streisand, No Hollywood types to be found.

Nope, we just melted the snow for water.

Sent out caravans of SUVs to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars.

The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny.

Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snowbound families.

Families took in the stranded people - total strangers.

We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.

We put on extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die".

We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks.

Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.

"In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 40 degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate."

It does seem that way, at least to me.

I hope this gets passed on.

Maybe SOME people will get the message. The world does Not owe you a living.

The blizzards in Colorado recently weren't pimple on Katrina's *** in terms of distruction, death(over 1000+ people DIED) and devistation. To post a comparison of the two is an insult to the thousands upon thousands of people that lost there loved ones and EVERYTHING they owned. Way to go.

This most definantly should go under the political forum, but it just shows that PEOPLE should take care of themselves and no longer rely on the government for aid and support. As far as the snows, most mountain areas go through a situation like this every so often, it is just a way of life and pattern. We deal with it and the old timers are prepared for it, the new arrivals, etc are not and therefor the news media jumps all over it. In the long run another year comes and goes. Life is good in the mountains. Now back to fishing, will start driving down the hill to Shasta and Oroville. Have a nice new year all. Bill K :)
Fun fishing the country, each and every week.

I've been talking to family back there, pretty crappy situation.

I don't miss Colorado right now, that is for sure, pretty hard to fish a hudd through a hole in the ice!

I personally read Jims post and enjoyed it, I commend the rugged individuality of those who endure severe weather events thru preparedness . Tragic storm events do bring people together I have personally experienced this having been thru and worked for two years on hurricane recovery efforts in Florida.. most notably Hurricane Charley . Hurricanes are slow in approaching and most people have a choice to evacuate or ride out the storm, others may not be able to leave for various reasons I personally would have walked hitched or done anything I could to get out of New Orleans Storm surges and flooding are far more damaging than the winds of a hurricane except for the tornadoes spawned by the storm the breach of the levees was the kicker but everyone new the city was below sea level . Gulf Port Miss. got hit with a wall of water that knocked houses off their foundations and pulverized them. Storms now are more population events than weather events as so many people live near the water in hurricane prone areas. My sincere and heart felt sympathy goes out to all those adversly affected by Katrina but it can happen again many who evacuated will never return by their own choice...
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!
