Motor problems

Post by William Penn »

While running accross the lake yesterday the motor had a sudden loss of power. When I first sensed it, I threw it in neaturl and throttled back. It coasted down to a stop and then nothing. The ignition makes a clicking noise when you hit the key but she fails to start, wont even turn over. It is a 1999 225 V-Max OX66. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's gonna be hard to diagnos through the computer.
I noticed one thing you said, that you put it in nuetral and then throttled down? The reason I bring this up is that I was warned that sudden decelerations while running WOT is tough on the reeds. I'm sure a few times wouldn't hurt, but if this was a common practice you could of sucked a reed.
Like I said there's way to many variables to this, just a thought.
Good luck and I hope what ever the problem is it's not to painful.

Sounds like a possible loose or corroded battery cable??? Maybe just as a simple check...

Like Jason said, check your connections to the battery. Being it is winter and damp. Most likely this maybe the problem. Corrosion may have set in or maybe just loosen up on you from runn'in in ruff waters.

Good luck

i agree i would take a couple of minutes to check to see if your battery is loose or dead for that matter. it could be a simple electrical problem. if you suck your reeds it should still turn over and not start. also look into a starter maybe a solinoid is stuck. just somthing to look into. my 4 cents.... nathan

Start with the cheapest easiest things. Pull the battery have it checked. Use a voltmeter to see how many volts are getting from your battery to the engine. Check for any type of cable rub or fuse that popped. Then to starter then to the check book!

I appreciate the feed back. My worries were that it might have siezed up. I pulled the spark plugs to check for any fresh metal shavings on them and all of them were fine except for one. It was cooked and fresh signs of alum. all over it. Just my luck!

I hate to say it but, it's seized. Mine ('02 Opti) did exactly the same thing. I hope for your sake I'm wrong, but I'm probably not. Bummer man, I feel your pain. :(
