swimbait pole advice

Post by jwerner »

Looking to try some swimbaits in western WA this year. Baits will be in the 6" - 8" range. Being that these are smaller baits than the 10 - 12" bait many in CA use, what pole would you recommend and why? Thanks in advance.

I would suggest trying the Powell swim bait rods. Try the 734c its 7'3" ex-fast 12-25lb. line and 1/4 - 1 oz. baits. Also try the 735mh its 7'3" ex-fast 12-25 lb. line and 1/4 - 1 1/2 oz. baits. I would pair these with a shimano reel like the super free curado or maybe a chronarch. These are both great rods because the are light, sensitive and all around great priced rods. Some of the comparable rods can cost up to twice as much. Before you buy try the rods at at your local shop. Hope this will help. You can also check out the full line of Powell rods using the link on the sponsors page.
Thanks,

Okuma Guide Select 7'6 or 7'11. Yhey come in MH, H and XH actions to cover a wide range of swimbaits and at only $99.00 you cant beat the price.

I choose to use the Redington Swimbait Rod. (RFXC 7911) It too is $99, it fishes very similar to some of the other rods mentioned but it has a softer tip section. You'll be able to throw the smaller baits with more ease and its a lot more forgiving when you get fish close to the boat which will virtually eliminate boatside break-offs. Its ultimately going to come down to preference but the Redington is what I throw 98% of the time.

I will 3rd that On the Okuma rods. If you plan on using a lot of 6" baits try the Heavy. I use Extra Heavy on the 8" baits but the heavy is fine for the 8" baits also.

Best of luck to ya.
