Jig info

Post by griz01 »

I'm trying to become a better jig fisherman, but would like some advice on what jig colors to throw for different times of the year, what type of jig heads, brands, skirts, any info I can get. I know there alot of jig fishermen on this site so I'm hoping for good info. I fish different lakes in the foothills and the delta.

Thanks

griz01 being in the McLure area i would suggest trying there. McLure is a great place to learn to fish jigs. Stay with your browns with watermelon or rootbeer trailers (twin tail yamamotos) on steeper clay banks with chunk rock. Keep trying different areas until you find fish. Good luck. If you need some jigs Mark has some jigs that are killers at McLure.

More on Jigs

Griz,

You are getting some great answers here. For starting off and most of the time you really only need two color jigs Brown and Black. The accent colors may vary, but dont sweat this, the difference is nominal.

I personally like the Basspatrol jigs, the charecteristics of a good structure jig is Round rubber, a needle sharp 3/0 hook, a football head, the action of a good football head is critical. From here you may want sized from 3/8th to 3/4oz I personally use the 1/2oz to 3/4oz the most.

Trailers, this is the bread and butter If I could only have two colors forever they would be Yammamoto's green pumpkin, and brown purple. In pork I would want super pork brown or purple.

Line - Fluorcarbon I prefer Sugio Flurocarbon I use 16lb everywhere I go!

Also too there are football head jigs that you can pin a Hula Jig on and utilize in the same type of fashion as the above jigs, once you build your confidence in the basics you will find that certain highlight colors or trailers are better on certain lakes. However dont let this be your focus a brown jig with a brown purple trailer mimics most crayfish in most lakes!

I really enjoy fishing the jig, it is my go to bait when there is a great bite and my go to bait when it is a crappy bite! :lol:

If you would like I may have a small "work in progress" piece I have written covering structure jigs. send me a PM and I will get it out to you.

Regards,

Jonathan

griz01;
It might not be a bad idea to stop by Jigs Bait & Tackle only 4 miles from Lake Mc clure. They stock Jigs and may have some info on the lake ??
