Whats your weakness?

Post by Mike »

I try to be as well rounded as a fisherman as I can, but I do realize that I could be better at Rippin and Swimbaits.

What are your weaknesses??

Deffinately drop-shotting. It produces really well but I always do everything else first. So I guess that is why it's one of my weaker attributes, less time doing it.

My biggest weakness by far is using one of my confidence baits or techniques way too long and continuing to use it when its not producing. Making the decision to change comes way too slowly for me and I think I waste a lot of valuable fishing time. I wish I knew the "right time" to make a switch or had the discipline to change after so many minutes or casts that don't produce.

Spinnerbaits and frogs. Everyone says they are great big fish lures but my best fish on either bait is like 4lbs. Seems like every time I pick up a blade or a frog I get nothing but tiny fish, frogs especially.

When you get to where you don't like a specific bait it's a downward spiral because you become unwilling to invest the time to learn it correctly.

Good question, too many answers..It would be a lot easier to tell you my strengths..I do good with cranks and flipping Senkos, everything else, I need to improve on..There are some things I have yet to try, actually too many things..It seems that new techniques and new baits are always well ahead of me..I keep sticking to what I have had the most success with..

Biggest weakness. Not thinking outside of my box. If i'm using a bait, and its catching lots of the same size fish I tend to stick with it to long. I will be specifically working on this in the new year. I keep telling myself put it down, but its hard for me to do that.

Darter heads and spoonin'! And the reason I prolly don't use these and feal confident in doing so, is that I also pay very little attention at reading and following what my graphs are telling me beyond the structural changes of the bottom and cover I see. So that puts me in a bad position when fishing a suspended bite on the lakes.

I am embarrassed to say my Biggest Weakness is.

JIGS-- I KNOW I have to throw them, but I just use T-rigs instead. I know there is a Big difference in quality of fish!!

I have recently bought a lot of Jigs to help (FORCE) me to use my Jig Rods.

I really like Blades, Jerk baits, Swim baits, Top water, Carolina and of course Texas rig. I use this stuff the most and never give the other techniques a chance, My loss!!

You teach me to fish the jig as well as you do and I'll show you how to slam the big ones on the c-rig at Folsom.

I would have to say casting jigs in the reserviors for a bigger bite. I just don't stick with it when I know I can tear them up on the smaller plastics.

One special dock in Konocti in August!

Post by NaCl »

I'll tell you what, I've never caught a fish near that dock in summer but I keep trying. I've seen lots of bigguns there. On a hot day, when the bite on CL is tough, I always seem to end up fishing near that one dock...go figure! LOL!

Suspended Spotted Bass!!! Would love catch them on swimbaits... Finding the active ones, or finding what they want is a mystery to me. And I'm talking about the ones sitting in 40-100ft of water 15-20 ft down. I second that one about the C rig. I just tried a finesse C-rig yesterday... One bite :( I was using a 1/4oz Mojo Rockhopper, and the C-rig plastic stop instead of a swivel. Just trying to think outside the box and get something going- but didn't have much luck on it. Anyone try C-rigs on steep rocky lakes with any success?

Not doing my homework beforehand. I feel better if I have a plan -even for fun trips, but sometimes I'm just in a hurry to get out & forget to study the maps, make sure fresh line& the right baits are ready.

Dropshot - I just can't take it seriously...(I KNOW...) I kid myself that it's because I just fish so much at night....but.....I think I just don't like to.

Shakey head -but I'm workin' on it.
It's just a beating.....till you fight back.

My overall weakness is catching fish in general, but I suppose my weakest of the weaknesses are jigs and swimbaits! Not to mention reading my electronics...

But then I also have to agree with the Wolfeman - but it's 18 year old single malt highlands scotch!

Hey dave - What's wrong with this webite???? Them are fightin words. I'll just take your money at poker again.

Probably my most lacking skill is the C-Rig. I rarely use it and probably could do better if I had it in my arsenal. Hey Damon - I'll show you how I fish a jig if you'll teach me how to C-Rig. Also, I got the stuff for your mask, PM me so I can get it to you.

Well, I have become painfully aware......

Post by Fish Chris »

that my weakness is "bass fishing like a normal person" ! No ! Seriously !

I mean to say, I'm a pretty decent swimbait fisherman.

I'm an excellent sight fisherman (If I could only find a big bass to sight fish for !!!) .... I haven't caught a double digit bass while sight fishing for the last two years though :-(

Of course I can sit on a rock pile for 10 hours straight working a live dad painfully slow too...... Or stitch a crawler at 10 minutes per cast....

But just to "blind fish" down a bank with a little plastic worm.... or a crank bait.... or a spinnerbait...... I just freaking SUCK !
I've just all but forgotten how to fish like most other bass fishermen do.......
Which ordinarily doesn't hurt me for the kind of fish I like to chase. But recently, I have run across these trophy freaking fish that only seem to go for little fish techniques :-( ....and it's just freaking killing me over here !

Sighhhhh....

My weekness is letting myself being talked out of taking enough time to thouroughly breakdown structure and cover it's entirety with a jig for some bigger fish.... I know I should do it everytime I get the opportunity, but I am quickly talked out of it by the more experienced voice in the back of the boat....Different styles I guess....So thats my weakness... whats the fix? 50 \ 50 styles

Jig fishing kills me. I really need to figure out what the heck I'm doing when it comes to that. I think part of my problem is that alot of the places I fish have super clear water and I have a problem having confidence in a dumb looking skirt with some black plastic sticks coming up in front of the hook. I swith to the hula grub all too often.

Pretty much the same story with spinnerbaits. They just look dumb to me and I've only caught a dozen or so fish on them. One of the most well known and extensively fished baits in bass fishing and I can't catch my own bASS with a handful of them. Go figure.

It's kinda funny because some of the stuff other guys said they have trouble with are really my strong points, i.e. ripping and dropshot. I'm also a pretty decent swimbait stick. It's weird though. Not a single fish over 10 on the swimbait but I've caught lots of 3's and 4's. Go figure.

swimbaits.. I keep trying, got some decent fish but not the big dogs yet...

Deep cranking... I used to crank quite a bit and just can't get myself to pick up any cranks other than speed traps, rat-l-traps and bombers...

How about the whole delta pre-spawn in general.. I don't think I'm neccesarily that bad cause I find a decent bite now and then.. it's just that it seems everyone else is doing fantastic in comparrison come game day.

Bed fishing, I just don't have the patience to stare at an uncooperative toad on a nest.

On the other end of the year, sept and oct kill me on the river every time. Even though some of my biggest bites have come during these months, I can rarely fill a decent limit out.

Over fishing a spot during pre-fish.. I've won a lot of tournaments in my head during practice and got some nice photo's only to find all the bigguns gone on game day.

I have confidence in: CRig, Dropshot, Darthead, Cranks, Frogs...

I have little confidence in: Swimbaits, Jigs, blades, Rips...

I am really going to focus on those weaknesses this year. Especially the Jig and blades.

I would say my biggest weakness is Jig Fishing. I will throw the BrushHog before I throw a Jig.

That said.

I was once told by a guy who had a Black Belt in a couple different arts that also competed.

"You don't need to know all of the moves, you only need to know how to use a few really really good ones"
