KNUDSON AND WALLS INCREASE LEAD IN NEVADA REGION
BY LARRY DUNCAN
NEVADA REGIONAL DIRECTOR

SEARCHLIGHT, NV. – On April 7 as launch time neared the anglers couldn’t believe the weather on Lake Mohave. After enduring wind, rain and freezing cold weather at the four previous tournaments there was not a ripple on the water as 21 teams launched at Cottonwood Cove. With the perfect weather the top teams looked forward to an outstanding day of fishing.

By 10:00 am things began to change. The wind started to blow from the South and by 1:00 pm there were four foot swells across the basin. Shortly after 1:00 one of the front running teams for Angler of the Year was finished for the day. Having been towed in by a pleasure boat Pat Donoho and Bobby Ellis hopes for a Lake Mohave win were over. After catching their first four fish, Pat & Bobby decided to go south. At around 9:00 am they developed engine problems. Flagging down a pleasure boater they were towed in. Having started the tournament tied for first the only question was how far behind the leader would they be at the end of the day. Weighing in only 9.36 lbs. it was clear it was clear they had a lot of ground to make up.

Shortly after Donoho and Ellis were towed in, the tournament claimed another victim. Fishing as a team for the first time in the region, Dave Hoover and Mike Meshkoff, also had motor trouble. Staying just North of Cottonwood Cove and running on only their trolling motor they managed to limp backed to the marina with a limit. Bring a 12.99 lb. limit to the scales and topping it off with a 3.16 lb big fish Dave and Mike took the early lead.

As the day wore on it was clear that the wind would make thing difficult for the remaining teams. Several teams told stories of high waves and difficulty in coming up from the dam. But all that aside the weights were far better than those posted at the March 3rd Mohave Tournament. Having only one limit brought in in March, 12 limits were brought to the scales on this windy day.

Bring in limits were the teams of Jeff and Charles Hudson with 10.49 lbs., John and Tammy Morrow with 10.51 lbs., Dave Hoover and Mike Meshkoff with 12.99 lbs., Ray Coleman and Daniel Unten, last tournament winners and the only limit, with 13.59 lbs., Ron Raynor and Jimmy Sullivan with 13.80 lbs., Ben Andreas and Darian Stumpf with 14.25 lbs., Steve Howard and Steve Pike with 14.68 lbs., and the Grandfather and Grandson team of Ron and Logan Branscum with a limit weighing in at 13.35 lbs. and a big fish, caught by Logan, weighing 3.48 lbs. Ron is the father of Danny Branscum, the perennial Angler of the Year, and Logan Danny’s 9 year old son proved to be a powerhouse team finishing in 10th place. Finishing in fourth place was the team of Gerald Webster and David Zachgo with a limit weighing 14.87 lbs., a big fish weighing 3.41 lbs.

The top three places hosted two old teams and one new team. In third place was reigning AOY Danny Branscum and Troy Duncan. For the first time since they have been a team Danny and Troy blanked in the March tournament losing their hold on the Anglers of the Year. This tournament they had a five fish limit weighing 14.97 lbs. and a big fish of 4.12 lbs. Having caught their limit by 9:00 am they didn’t have another bite until the last hour.

New to the top three were Deejay Evans and Paul Nichols finishing in second place. Deejay and Paul’s limit weigh in at 15.50 lbs and the second big fish of the tournament weighing 5.03 lbs. Deejay and Paul decide late Friday to fish the tournament since they had already paid for the March 4th tournament that was canceled and rolled it over to the April tournament, a profitable decision on their part.

Increasing their lead in the region, Marc Knudson and Ron Walls weighed in the big bag of the tournament. Marc said “I didn’t think we had a chance to win, I thought it would take at least 20 lbs to win the tournamentâ€

Larry, great report!! We really enjoy it when tourny directors give us the "story" along with the results. By the way, it was a pleasure fishing with you day two of the WON Delta Pro/Am. Take care.
