sunglasses, HELP

Post by Timber_Effects »

I just read the "Sunglasses - Sunglasses - Sunglasses by Keith Clow "

just so happens I am looking to buy a new pair right now. I would like to hear who you all like best and why.
This past weekend, with the weather we had, a GOOD pair would have helped alot rather than the cheap pair I have now.

thanks in advance for the help. :D

I have the Solar Bat Sonar 22 w/ the mossback lense. I dont' have much to compare them to, but I really like them. They're a little big for my nugget, but they do a great job of keeping the wind out of my eyes when I'm drivin and I can see great in the water

If your local Costco has them in stock.... Maui Jim's -- MJ-408-10 are extreamly hard to beat for $59. -- They are currently olny available in Rose lense.

I had also picked up some Puma's in the HCL Amber for $29 - Very nice wide wraparound frames

....On letting Luke use them for the first time on his last DTT tourney- they went into Davy Jones's locker.

I suggest you go out and try on several different brands to find out what works best and fits best for you. Do you need an Rx? That will play a big part in your choice.

I just went through all of this getting a pair of distance Rx "wrap-around" sunglasses that'll not get blown around when I'm running in the boat. After trying the Maui's, Oakleys and a few others I narrwowed it down to either WylieX or Panoptx. I ended up with the Panoptx because they fit my face better than the WylieX did. I actually liked the frame designs of the WylieX better, but they just didn't fit me right. Both these brands have specific fishing lens types that enhance underwater viewing.

Previously I have bought 3 pairs of Solar Bats. 3 pairs because the frames broke at the temple on the first two and the only reason the third pair hasn't broken yet is because I just don't wear them. (Not to mention that Solar Bat was not very helpful when I contacted them about the breakage. Without even seeing them I was told that I obviously am not putting them on or taking them off properly. )

Take the suggestions you get here as just that - suggestions. If you are looking for a high-quality pair then try several on and find out what works best for you.

I have had a similar experience with solar bat. paid over $110 for a pair and the lens kept popping out, and it cost me ANOTHER $35 to get them fixed (they didn't replace them). Not real excited about solar bat glasses anymore. I bought them because I wanted to support our sponsers, but being charged another $35 for something that I feel was a defect just rubbed me the wrong way.

I know with the wind howling at Clear Lake last weekend and the Rain my Ski Goggles worked great, keep debris out of your eyes, covers the majority of your face and dont fog up. For 20.00 I conisder this a sound investment. Dont get me wrong I wear my Cocoons for fishing and have had no issues with them when running during normal winds.

But all fishermen should be reminded to protect our eyes, its the only pair we have!

I've got a pair of Oakley's Monster Dogs. I lost a pair at Melones and Liked them so much Had to replace them. So now I've had two pairs of them. Oakley's are More expensive for polarized lenses... but you can look cool on and off the water!!!!LOL They surround my eyes and fit my face well... I would make sure you find a pair that fit you face well...makes them less likely to blow off... Got to your local mall and take your lady with you and try a bunch on until you find ones that fit... Thats the only way to go. Most major Sunglasses brands carry polarized lenses.

P.S. I've noticed that it looks like KVD also wears Oakley Monster Dogs... If they're not Monster Dogs they're Monster Pups. Not that Matters but I thought it was cool.

Solar Bat with mossback or the "gradient lens"

Post by SABP »

They have a good selection.

The mossback is great.

The HiConY is really something in low light conditions. Gives you two extra feet of visibility.

The gradient lens combines the two together.

i wear oakleys a lot for fishing and non-fishing. i just started using some wileys though. i love my oakleys but they did not wrap around enough. i would come home from fishing with bloodshot and sore eyes. the wileys wrap around a lot more and, when pulled tight to the face, act as goggles. was up at clear lake last week and made runs in that rain and wind and my eyes were fine. so far so good with the wileys.

Got to suggest the Maui Jims. The reason I started wearing them is because Andre Moore give me one of his older pairs and I loved them. They are by far the best glasses on the market. They also have a patented polirization proces. The only way to get a patent is to do something different than everyone else. Check them out and see for yourself.

Sunglasses are different for everyone.

I actually just got som Costa Del Mar's with the Amber 580 lense... and really like them. They are expensive though.

I also have several pairs of Eye Surrender's which are great as well and only $30.... They have four colors of lenses and work great. Hell, if the FLW World Champ (Brent Ehrler) can wear them and win, I am sure they are good enough for me!

I have also used solar bats over the past few years... and they are great as well.

I love sight fishing and wouldn't have a problem using any of these glasses.

For me in my boat right now for sight fishing I have 1 pair of Costa Del Mars with Amber 580 lenses and 3 pairs of Eye Surrenders in Green, Dark Gray and Yellow for the different light conditions that may arise..

I think the Costa are more stylish if you wanted to wear them out other than fishing.

I would recommend WileyX, great product and very comfortable. Smoke green or mirror blue lens work well. If you are hard on your glasses stay away from the mirror blue as they scratch easily.

Personally, I've tried a lot of them ... Maui Jims, Costa Del Mars, Hobies, SolarBats ... and Kaenon's.

I've settled on Kaenon's for the time being. Sometimes, you'll have to try something yourself as oppose to hear about them from others. Sunglasses are a very, very personal thing. The fit, the color, the lense shape, etc all play into whether or not a particular brand/model will meet your needs.

For instance, I have heard that Maui Jim's are great ... well, they may have the best optical quality lenses as compared to some. But for me their colors are too DARK ... Hobies are great as are Costa Del Mars as well. But for me they're all too dark. SolarBats, for what they cost me, felt very cheap and the lense fall out too easily ... For me, I wanted something that has a good polarization and good lense quality.

Even the Kaenon's, are somewhat of a compromise. Their frame barely fit's my face/eye's ... still occasionally, my eye lash brush up against the lense causing a smear right in my line of sight. I have to clean them a couple of times a day while fishing. But ... they offer some of the lightest (color wise) polarized lense I've found. I currently use the "28" in gray. That's blocking 28% of the rays I think. They also have a lighter one ... but I forgot the exact percentage. These are not cheap lense, often costing in the neighborhood of $200 ... you can find them on sale now and then for much less.

If you don't mind the SolarBat's, you can get a pair of them from Walmart in their fishing department for ~$18. ... YES Eighteen dollars! ... they don't fit me though ... but I have a round FLAT face ...

I was using Oakleys and picked up a pair of these with the gradient lenses. I no longer wear the Oakleys when fishing :)

Smith optics, Amber and copper are my choices.

I was thinking, what type of angler has the hardest time at seeing fish the most?

I picked fly fishermen, they have to ba able to see through moving, choppy, shallow, water with the shadows playing a big part. weather it's from rocks, trees ect.

So I went into a local fly shop and bought what they sold. They tried to sell me 1 "Do all" pair.

I told them that I wanted the best color for differnt situatiuons. I dont care if I need 3 pair, as long as those 3 pair can give me the best veiw, it's a GO.

My saying is, "the day I say I can get by with __________ is the day I get out of the boat"

I also agree with SOCB Hawghunter--goggels are a must for runnen in the rain!!

What color Lense did you get?

Now get yourself a pair or two of Eye Surrenders in the opposite lense colors --- because there is no way 1 lense color can cover all the possible lighting we have here in cal!

I have heard that Maui Jim's are great ... well, they may have the best optical quality lenses as compared to some. But for me their colors are too DARK ...

True that..... I just picked up the MJ Stingrays. MJ-103-10. Heavier than what I am used to- but wrap very nicely. They have the HCL Lense, and even my wife noticed how everything is "Sharper" than even her MJ's in the same lense.

But they ARE a dark lense... almost to dark. ?? -- But they still work very nice looking in water.

--I noticed another test last Sunday leaving church. My last pair of MJ's MJ-408-10 in the rose lense..(Plastic lense as my last three pair of MJ's were always Glass lenses)... I never saw the reflection patterns of the Safety Glass on cars. I put the Stingrays on after church in the parking lot and there again was the safey glass on all cars revealed once again. :D

Some things I noticed also between these last two pair/and my wifes... My wifes and my last MJ's were made in Japan ... The MJ stingray's say they were made in Italy? -- Are they talking just the frames and not the lenses? -- Or all components?? :?:

For those of us that wear prescription eyewear, finding a pair of sunglasses to fit over prescription glasses has always been a nightmare. I have run through a bunch including Solar Bats but the main problem I found is the side plates were an insert that eventually loosened up and vibrated while on plane. I recently purchased a pair of Vistana fitovers from Cabelas and gotta say they are really a nice fit and stylish....something we eyeglass wearers have a problem with. The nice thing about them is they actually wrap around so there are no vibrating side plates and I have no problem seeing the fish. So unless you want to fork over $300 for prescription polarized glasses, give these a try for under $50.
