Spook?
Re: Spook?
Adding a split ring (or tieing with a loop knot if you prefer not to add hardware) will give you a bit more action. I like the oval split rings myself, but when going after stripers I use Owner HyperWire rings....
You'll probably get a 50/50 split in the responses though...

Re: Spook?
Hey seth i was using the round split ring on super spooks but then started tying direct with braid. It seems to have more action but im not sure because i get the braid caught in the front hook alot. i have since went back to 17-20 # mono DIRECT to the bait it seems to be working good but i really liked casting the braid i could cast a MILE i would say try different lines and with and without the rings everyone prefers something different. Re: Spook?
Wesley Strader on FLW this weekend showed how to tie the loop knot. I believe they replay it tomorrow on Versus. You can always give that a try.
I love throwing walking baits (Balsa Pro) on 18 lb. Max and I tie direct. I tried the split ring and I wasn't getting the action I wanted out of it.

I use the loop knot, but with just another overhand knot above the first on, pulled down tight. Hasn't slipped yet. I use 17lb mono for a leader with 50lb braind main line.
You can vary the size of the loop, bigger loop, bigger side to side, but, generally speaking, I've found the smallest loop is the best.

Rapala Knot
I use it on all topwater and for my saltwater applications it's a great knot for getting your bait to be a little more active than the other guys
