More Clear Lake Questions!

Post by speedo »

Buddy and I are going to be on the lake Wed and Thurs and staying at Blue Fish Cove in Glenn Haven area. Have only fished the lake once before and we stayed pretty close to Redbud and the area across from where we'll be this time.

I understand Senkos, in Watermelon, Watermelon and Watermelon, maybe green pumpkin, are a good bet. Docks for Senkos weedless/weightless, deep rocks for dropshots? Other suggestions?

My boat's on Oroville full time, so I'm used to dink spots. Am I nuts to take my light rig with 6# to Clear Lake? (We're not taking my "bass boat"!)

How 'bout dinner in that area? Lunch on the lake? Any suggestions welcome!

Clear Lake is pretty wide open.. They'll eat just about any bait your throw...

Now the big ones are a bit picky... but, you can catch all the 1-2-3 lbers you can handle with any bait you want!

Seriously... If there is a bait you don't have confidence in... now is the time to get some confidence in it!

Your 6# rig should be fine, just make sure the drag is adjusted properly. Personally I only go as low as 8# on my light drop rig at the lake. I prefer 8# Stren or Trilene XL.

Yesterday I took my first smallie there on my light drop rig using 8# Stren. I thought I had a GIANT largie, what a surprise when I finally landed that fish.

Don't leave home without some MMIII (Margarita Multilator) colored worms. I would also recommend white and chartrueuse spinnerbaits and an LV 500 in the American Shad pattern.

As Tom noted the bite is just about wide open, have fun :)

"Am I nuts to take my light rig with 6# to Clear Lake?"

I fished with Aaron Martens in Day 3 of the BASS Event at Clear Lake. Virtually everyone was throwing huge baits all over the place. Aaron had downsized to 6 LB Floro and we were drop shotting with 4-inch robo worms.

Now, we happend to have a poor day that day, but he had 20+ lbs doing that on days 1 and 2.

Point being ... throw what you want to throw and have fun. Don't let anyone tell you "you can't do that" or "you gotta do this."

Don't overlook tossing a jig up there, the jig bite is awesome! And Bob over at Limit Out Tackle, now has the TNT Wadda's on the shelf!

Cooch, I knew you'd be telling me to try the jig! You shamed me into it a couple of years ago, and I planned to use it this week, too, since it seems like everything is working. It'll give me a chance to develop some confidence in it. Quarter ton to half ton? Usual twin-tail grubs from Yamamoto?

Thanks for the tip on lodging, btw, we're stayin at the Blue Fish

That be it.

And I must give credit to Lunker Larry for this color he's the one who turned me on to it. Why Yamamoto hasn't renamed it the "Hemphill Special" is beyond me :)

The jig was working for me. Black, or brown. Brown caught more fish, and the black caught the bigger ones!

Stock that is too funny. I was gonna say the same thing. you beat me to it... :o Lunker Larry turned me on to that color at Oroville and its been one of my favs ever since. It will work anywhere and 180 should be known as the Hemphill special as he has turned more of us on to that color that anyone else. (Brn&org weapon jig W/ 180 trailer)

What else!

164

And as much as I give Larry credit too, fer turning me onto that 180 up at Oroville, that 164 will work on any lake on the planet!

The 180 and 164 are great colors up there at ClearLake, but ya better have the 157 and 209 in the boat too for them days when they just will not eat the others!

But then again, anything Blue Emerald is Numero uno up there, just ask Dorothy!

I've fished every color senko in my box this past few weeks.... I'm cleaning out the colors I won't be needing any more....doesn't seem to matter to the fish, long as it's got that wiggle.

Topwater has been AWESOME up here DO NOT forget to throw the spook & the frog. It's as much fun as the law allows.

I hear the jig bite's south. & will there be some late spawners out for this full moon?...

Tom's right -it's an 'open your tacklebox & throw whatever you've got...' bite.
It's just a beating.....till you fight back.
