Greg,

I don't think it was so much trying to be kept a secret, as that there were a limited amount of baits available. This is why it was offered to subsribers of the Huddleston Deluxe newsletter via the "hidden link". I think they were trying to avoid a mob order scene that this thread creates which in turn will cause people to complain because they order baits and do not receive them in what they believe is a timely fashion.

Remember Guys, if you don't get your baits promptly, there is a reason...there are currently only so many to go around. These are not "mass produced" baits. So please be patient. There will also be a "slower" rate of fall version available in the near future. The one currently being shipping is estimated at around an ROF 12. They are working on a ROF 5.

Good luck to those who get their orders filled!

Looks like a pretty good bait. I would like to compare it to something like the Storm shad. Doesn't compare in price, but I am curious on how the durability is. Again does look great, and I am sure Ken has come up with another major product.

Hey Guys,

I am just starting to get good with swimbaits, so this may be a dumb questions but here goes. How far would you let this one sink?? How fast would you retrieve??

Hey JR. That is something you need to let the fish show you like any other bait by getting hits. There is not a wrong way to fish them if you are catching fish. Top, Bottom, Mid range, Fast.slow,on the fall, jig it on the bottom, dead stick it, any way you fish it can get a hit so just go out and try many retrieves and see what works that day.

It is a really light solid body fly, you could probably use it with regular tackle on light line and a split shot maybe. It looks great and works really well. Redding Fly Shop has that fly plus lots of other bass flies, worm flies, topwater etc, you can also use striper flies like a Clouser Minnow. If you see a fly rod at Clear Lake it is probably me. No one really does it, but man it is fun on every hookup!

Here's the link to the one in the picture.

I've got my order in for the Huddlestons as well, hope it comes soon.

Ken Huddleston made these baits available to the public today, if you didn't get the email, here it is:

Dear Friends,

I hope that you have had enough time to place an order for the
Huddleston Shad.

We did the best we could to fly under the radar to give you
first shot. But, I think the word is pretty much out now! So
we are opening the page to the public.

The good news is that we are less than a week out on shipping.
In other words if you order today, your order will ship within
one week. That might change but, for now we are keeping up.

To those of you that have ordered, thank you for your support.
And please give us feedback on how the bait is performing. As
you all know taking a custom bait to production is a learning
process. The quality will go up on this bait as we iron out
the kinks!

As always, if you are not 100% happy, email us so we can take
care of you as soon as possible.

We're sending orders out in bags now but, will soon have
clamshells. When this happens we will start to fill orders to
our retailers.

I have not been able to calculate the exact rate of fall yet.
I don't want to give you incorrect information. I just need to
find some time to calculate it. However, it behaves similarly
to a rate of fall 12.

God bless all of you!

Ken

Mixed results for me so far....

Post by StockOption »

I finally had a chance to use this bait today at Clear Lake. I thought it worked very well but man was it hard to keep the fish hooked up solidly. Out of the 8 or so fish I had completely engulf this bait I only managed to land 3, pretty poor percentage I know. Now I'm sure my approach can be improved, however the hook exposure on these baits is very, very small. I was throwing this bait using 12 lb fluro on a Powell 705C and 704C. I tried many different hooksets, easy, medium and -quite- hard. I tried adding a small trailer hook, but that got pretty messy as there's not much room on this small bait.

So anyone else have better luck with this new bait?

My track record so far:

Broke one off about 5 lbs ( bad knot, i'm an idiot)
Missed a bite
Had a fish take the tail
Caught a 3lb squaw fish.

kurt,,

were the 3 you landed hooked in the top of the mouth or what? How were you fishing the bait? i was throwing a similar bait 2 weeks ago and only farmed a few fish in 2 days. I set as soon as they bit but at times it was just weight and that is when I farmed the fish. RR

2 of the 3 landed were hooked in the roof of the mouth. The remaining fish was hooked in the side of the mouth. I was using a pretty simple cast, crank and wind. I'd let the bait settle a bit depending upon the depth then just do a slow steady retrieve. I tried letting the fish take the bait for a second, then swinging, also tried swinging on any contact. I had quite a few hook-ups but the vast majority ended up spitting the bait duirng the battle, typically when they'd jump. The largest I had on was probably between 5 + 6lbs.

Stock Option, maybe you should try fishing powerpro on a 7'6" flipping stick like a 766 powell or the like. Also get rid of the 12 lb and switch to 30 or 50lb braid. I think you might be having a problem with burying the hook well enough. A while ago I was up there prefishing for a tourney and was throwing a basstrix paddle tail. I was getting bit using 14 lb florocarbon and a powell 765 like you. I missed a ton of fish. I switched to a gloomis fsr904 imx with chronarch 100 and 50lb power pro. Less bites but hook and land ratio went up exponentially. Maybe this will help.

I was thinking of trying braid for this bait as well, thanks.

However, I do NOT have this issue with the Basstrix baits I use as I use a much larger (5/0 falcon) hook. And the design of this bait allows the hook to break free of the bait therefore holding a bit better, IMO.

I do think the hook exposure that comes standard on these baits is tiny and definitely part of the problem.

How many come in a bag or package? and whats the cost, before I go off the deep end like i did with the basstrix. When I ordered the basstrix from Orville outdoors, I thought I was buying one of each, so when I got my shipment and opened the box, i was pretty surprised to find 25 boxes of 4 to 5 in a package in each type and color I had ordered. I went to there store the next week and changed it up to some 5 inch as well, but I still got enough basstrix to last me for about 100 years, Don't want to do that again. Nope I wont sell em on e-bay, Rather give em away to fellow nut cases at the lake, who can use em. Rather than to make a buck.

The link is on this thread. They come two per pack at 12.99. With two colors so far.
On losing fish on the jump, I think it is like any other swimbait you can't let the fish shake. You have to pull there heads to you with your rod down (keep reeling). If they can shake there head the bait comes out most of the time. If you can not pull the bass to you, you need to beef up the rod or line or both. No shake = more bass in the boat.
This works for me.

Kurt,

I was also amazed at how hot those fish were for post spawn fish! I actually muscled most into the boat after having the same problem. might not be the bait or equipment just seems like a off the hook hungry bite and fight! RR

Follow-up...

Post by StockOption »

...so it looks like the initial production of these baits puts a coating of plastic paint on the hook. Be sure you scrape this off before using them. I believe this definitely contributed to my poor hook-up ratio when I first used them.
