Hey guys ! I've got oil leaking out of my lower unit.Right out of the propeller.
Oh yeahh -95 Ranger 488 , 200 Merc. Anybody have any experience here ? I suspect some fishin line got caught up in there and cut the seal?? Anyway I'm about ta rip & tear , It's just nuts bolts and a seal right?? Any heads ups would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I just had mine done a couple of days ago. Same thing with the oil leaking. I pulled the prop and pulled out as much line as I could see, refilled, ran it again and it still leaked. Ask the same question on here as you did and all the advice was take it to the shop if you don't have the seal press to press the seals.
I took mine in and it took them about an hour and half and cost me $140.00.
They said when they got the seals off there was fishing line between then seals and both seals were damaged.
Unless you have all the right tools, take it to a good boat shop and have them do it. Will not be that expensive and will be done right or they will have to make it good, if it still leaks after new seals. Bill K
Tony,
I am going through the same thing with my 97 200 Merc EFI. If you want to do it properly the bearing carrier must be removed with a special puller. It has an aluminum cover nut that normally requires a special cover nut nut tool as well. When reinstalling the cover nut, merc specifies 210 ft-lbs which is hard to do without the tool. They also make a special seal driver that puts each seal at the correct depth. These tools can be found on ebay if your patient. Having said all that, I did my own repairs by fabricating some tools and in the end I am not sure it was worth it. It was easy to pull the carrier without Merc's puller but the cover nut tool sure would be nice to get. 1.25" pvc pipe has just the right diameter to drive the seals. On the Bass Boat Central website under the mercury forum there are some threads you will find useful. I would give you the link but these sites are blocked when I am here at work but you can search under "bearing carrier" and "leaking seals". Be sure to check there is no rusting or other damage if there was water in the lower unit. If you go the route of getting a seal kit and replacing all the seals in the lower unit you should also replace the water pump. Good Luck
