buying a boat out of state

Post by clubchiman »

Does anyone know what I need to do if I buy a boat from another state? I know I have to go to California DMV to get a new CF# and get reg for the trailer but do I also have to go to that's states DMV and pay twice? Please let me know if anyone had done this and has good advice. thanks.

Make sure you have a signed pink slip, and a Bill of Sale. Then take them and the Boat and Trailer to the DMV. They will want to verify the numbers on the Trailer.

Best thing to do is call the DMV. since you will end up there anyways........
Several years ago i bought a 1 year old Nitro from a individual in Clearlake.........
2 years later i had to move to texas for 2 years, at which time i re registered there.
Not wanting to pay all the fees again when i returned to Californuia, ( including sales tax on the boat value ) i questioned DMV.
I dont have to re register it here.
I just have to keep all licenses & regesterations current in the state it is registered in.
I do have to pay a * luxury tax * to the county annually, which is around $ 100.00 .
I hadnt really paid to much attention, but, on the Delta, i do see lots of boats with out of state registeration, even as far away as New York.
Notify your county tax collector & they will get you set up.

DMV only gives you 3 months to switch the regisration to california unless you are a resident of another state (i.e. military). Once you pay taxes and register the boat you don't have to pay them again regardless of the state you move to. Just have to pay for the new plates and reg. fees.
However if you buy a boat in another state a pay the lower taxes their, then bring it to Cali to try to register it, you will have to pay the difference between the tax amount. You have to weed thru alot of crap but all this info. is on the DMV web site.

I have been here two years with Tx plates and no one has even asked me about it!
