I just DO NOT get it!
I just DO NOT get it!
According to the Bassmasters website "Ike" has been nominated for the Espy Award for 'Best Outdoor Athlete'.....I just don't get it! This guy acts like a friggin idiot runs around claiming he has on a world record when its lucky to be a 3 lber and he disgraces our countrys flag on national tv then denies it on national tv and they are gonna give him an award? I am sure this will light a fire with everyone but I could really care less-many will most likely say I should let it go but I cant and won't-he discraced my country and my countries flag-a country and flag some of my relatives have both fought and died for so again no I won't let it go. If that isnt enough for some of you he culled dead fish-kinda shows the type of outdoor athlete he is and what he promotes huh? Shows me he could give a s**t about mother nature and her creatures and he is in it for the cash. BASS (Bass Anglers Sportsmans Society does it still mean that???) I just don't understand how this friggin clown can be nominated when you got folks like,ok I will say it-Skeet! They say Ike has had 7 top ten finishes in the past 12 months....what has Skeet had....has he not finished in the top in ALL but the last tournament? How about KVD....hell even Swindle-ANYBODY but this guy form New Jersey. Yeah I am a big boy,you can say it.....I can't stand this little turd and I hate the fact he is being rewarded for anything! Can he fish-hell yes he is an amazing fisherman other than that he is a loser in my book. I wont even pose the question we have all mulled over soooo many times (why they hate the westcoast and westcoast Anglers so much!)Again-I will now be stepping off my soapbox! Neeeeext?

Right after I read the EXCELENT article someone wrote about KVD as the Ultimate Athlete in sports.
Then I clicked back again-- to read the Ike story to dbl check it as true and .......

It must go on figures of 2006

This year, Iaconelli will be up against four other nominees: mountaineer Samantha Larson, at 18 years old believed to be the youngest person to have climbed the "seven summits" — the highest peaks on each continent; mountaineer Ian McKeever, who has climbed six of the highest mountains on each continent since January 2007 and was expected today to summit the seventh, Denali; musher Lance Mackey, the back-to-back winner of the Iditarod and Yukon Quest international dog race; and runner Dean Karnazes, who ran 50 marathons in 50 days

Re: I agree with you Scott but
I don't see the big issue with Ike. I think he is definitely good for the sport. He has brought more attention to Bass fishing then others have for years. Granted he can be an idiot at times but you have to give him credit for his passion to the sport.
I don't agree with what he did to the American flag and by no means would I ever say that was ok. Did he learn his lesson? I think so and he has even capatalized on it. I think what Swindle did was really bad. He put people in jeopardy when he ran through them on plane at the classic. How many of you guys if given the chance would have pulled Swindle out of his boat for a beating if he did that to you. I know I would be pissed.
How come people are ok with what he did but not with Ike?

Re: I just DO NOT get it!
My grandson is 2 years old and loves to watch bass fishing and boats on tv. I have several shows recorded on my DVR. The one he really gets a kick out of is the Battle on The Border, Bassmasters Lake Amnistad. He laughs and throws his hands in the air and yells yeah every time someone catches a fish. I know that he was picking this up from watching Ike. My wife and I thought this was the coolest thing untill the following took place. We were watching him play outside on his little climber jungle gym thing, When all the sudden he says Pappa, and when I turned around he head butts his junglegym and looks up at me and laughs, then he does it again and this time cries because it hurt. For those that have not seen the battle on the border, Ike catches a pretty good fish and screams yeah, and then proceeds to Head-butt the console four or five times. Now my grandson is 2years old and picked this up. I can't even imagine what a kid 10 years old must be thinking. I wish Ike would quit the fake crap and let his awesome talent be the entertainment.

Re: I just DO NOT get it!
Hopefully he is smarter than Ike and does not head but anything again. If it gets him watching fishing and enjoys people getting excited about catching little green fish then that's great.
I'm with you I think he should control his antics and lets his awesome abilities do his talking. The guy is great stick.
Look at the other side some people think Van Dam is boring to watch cuz he doesn't get excited like Ike. When I'm watching Van Dam I feel like I'm watching a fishing machine. There is so much to learn from both of them.
They are both fishing machines but have different personalities. That's what makes them who they are.

Ike was nominated for his performance in 2006 (AOY). You can guarantee Skeet or KVD will be nominated for an ESPY next round. I personally fell IKE has been good for the Sport (most parts). Not butting his head or ripping a light and flag apart. But his intense, loud and free spirit brings new fans and fills the seats. People I talk to that know very little of the sport know IKE and dont know who Rick Clunn or Brauer.

Who created an ESPY, and who really cares except those that created it is my opinion. Not me that's for sure.
Ike makes ESPN money, so there's a little pat on the back and a keep up the good work with this nomonation.
His yelling and screaming has never done anything for me, except make me want to change the channel. I have heard that he is horrible to fish with, espaecially if you catch a good one behind him. I wasn't there so I really can't judge him on that. I have read he is great with the kids and will go out of his way to help? Then again who wrote the story?

Who NEEDS his kind of attention!
Saying IKE's antics, tantrums, and SPAZ ATTACKS are good for the sport, or sports in general is like saying :
- Tanya Harding is good for skating.
Latrell Sprewell, Chris Webber are good for basketball.
1919 Chicago White Sox were good for baseball.
Snoop Dog Poop is good for music.

Re: Scott
I probably wrote the story... and he IS great with kids AND great with anyone who loves to bass fish.
Do I agree with ALL his screaming and excitement? maybe not... but, do I understand it! hell ya.. It's fun catching fish and it's fun catching them in tournaments as I am sure you know.... someguys keep it hush hush and don't want anyone to know where or how they caught the fish.. others like to get excited. I get excited too... maybe not Ike excited but, if its true excitement and you want to let it out.. why not let it out... afraid to wake the neighbors?
As for the flag incident - he never denied it.. he apologized and said the flag wasn't on his mind.. only the light pole. He made a mistake just like EVERY ONE of us has or will do at some point! Is he anti-american - of course not, so let that crap die!! Your even bringing it up is a joke... now if he knocked the flag down intentionally and yelled America Sucks and Bush is an idiot then I'd condemn him too! (well maybe I'd agree with him on Bush, but not the America thing)
You guys can yack all you want about not liking him.. I doubt he cares.. Fact is, maybe people don't like you (not singling anyone out) for whatever reason. You cut them off in an event, you don't tell the truth at the awards ceremony when you win, you drive to fast, you drive the wrong boat manufacturer, you use the wrong rods and reels, you don't say hi when you walk past them, whatever the reason ---- I know for a fact there are people who don't like me... I keep a list when I hear someone doesn't like me I add that name....it is getting pretty long! Most have no reason to because they have never even met me or had a conversation with me... Do I care? hell no... I say what I believe and what I believe in.. I do what I think is truly best for the sport and if someone doesn't like it.... sorry, but I can't fake who I am to make you happy.... and neither will Ike.
If you don't like his hooten and hollerin' well then don't watch - I am sure you can find the FLW on FOX instead of BASS on ESPN... where you can get your fill of FLW sponsors and their promotions!
I say go Ike! He lives a relatively clean life with no problems with the Law unlike many other sports superstars... I have spent several days with him and have never seen him do or say anything I would consider offensive to anyone. He is energetic, exciting, smart and will stop and talk to anyone, anytime and treat them as an equal even though he can catch 5 fish to any of our 1 on any lake - anywhere, anytime! Is he the best outdoorsman in 2006? I don't know - but he won the AOY for BASS so that at least should get him an invite. Say what you want - but, then go back to your day job and dream you were in his shoes... just like I and anyone out here who wants to fish the big time does!
He belongs on a list with KVD, Aaron Martens and maybe a select few others as the best anglers in the world today!
PS - All this said, 50 Marathons in 50 days has my vote too! One of my fishing buddies is a manager for North Face and they are a major sponsor of his. He says that guy is a class act!

I have never met Ike. I like the way he fishes, and I think he is entertaining. Do I think he deserves an award as the outstanding outdoorsman of the year? Certainly not!!! Do I think he is the outstanding fisherman of the year? CERTAINLY NOT.

Re: I just DO NOT get it!
So when did running a long distance in whatever time you feel like (non-competition) make you at athelete? If this is the case my grandma is an athelete, she runs 5 miles everyday!
Running is an activity a lot like fishing, golf, bowling or riding a bike.
A athelete is someone who can use a multitude of atheletic skills like; run, jump, throw, catch, hit something, etc. To just go out and run everyday with no time limit and no competition is not exactly atheletic - any one of us could do it... Start today and run everyday going up and up in distances over time and you too could do it. Would any of us have the determination and stick-with-it-ness let alone time to do it? Probably not..
I think an athelete is someone who uses his atheletic ability to compete with a winner and a loser... Sports that come to mind are Basketball, Football, Baseball, Soccer, Tennis, Hockey, Lacross, Gymnastics, Fencing, Ice Skating, Snow Skiing, Snowboarding, Water skiing, Wakeboarding, bull riding, etc.. etc..
What this guy did is REMARKABLE but, does it make him a world class athelete? I think not... 95% of us would whip him in any of the sports I mentioned above!
Just my .02...

In the strictest sense of the word
An athlete is someone who who has the skill and ability to contend in a sport for a prize.
Therefore all fishermen are not athletes.
According to my big fat Websters New Twentieth Century Dictionary there are even Athletes of debate.
We dont get any prizes here but we sure as heck do a lot of debating.

Re: In the strictest sense of the word
Less than a week ago Jerry McKinnis was quoted as saying how ESPN, FOX, Sports Illustrated have long ignored bass fishing, ESPN doesn't even cover major events on Sports Center and they own BASS. I for one am glad they recognized an angler once again for an ESPY. They got rid of the Great Outdoor Games due to poor ratings and fishing was at the bottom of those ratings. I worked with ESPN when they came out to Folsom for the GOG's.
Remember a couple years ago when Jay Yelas lost to a Labrador in the ESPY Outdoor Athlete catagory. Jay does he jokes about it in his seminars. Imagine how we would all be up in arms if they forgot to nominate an angler.
I don't always agree with everything Ike does either but he has never been anything but nice to me, did interviews for the show any time I asked and I have a hard time saying much bad about Mike. I like alot of other guys wish they could fish like him.
Now for anyone that doesn't think bass anglers are athletes hasn't ever really played the game. Try it for 7 straight days, dawn to dark under the worse conditions and still catch them........you have no idea the difference.
Now let's quit bashing when an angler isn't on our most popular list. Ike was the Angler of the Year and Skeet or KVD could have been nominated as well but someone would not like Skeet's dancing or hair and they would be compelled to point out KVD would have been AOY last year if he wasn't DQ''d.
Next week, new bash session and this one will be on page 2.
Hey have all you guys concerned about the image the youth get from professional bass anglers signed up for the Pro Teen????? See you all there. Conlow you in?????

Re: In the strictest sense of the word
Ike actually seems like a pretty cool guy in person. He made time to stop and take a photo with my GF as well as sign a sweatshirt for her at the Clear Lake Bassmaster tourney. He also stuck around a lot longer than most of the other guys did and signed autographs and chatted with people. I dont agree with what he did with the flag but everyone makes mistakes...
IMO...All of the bass pro's are athletes. I'm glad to see a fisherman getting recognized as such.

Re: I just DO NOT get it!
I dont really agree with some of Ike's TV Antics, but its TV!!!!!. How much worse stuff is on TV!!!!!!! IF you stack up some of Ike's Antics or Shouts, against say violence and murder that TV is packed with. IKE would be at the very bottom. Out of all the sports on TV, I would rather watch Ike shout and scream at some fish than turn on sportscenter and see yet another NBA player is accused of Rape, an NFL Player is smoking dope and on trial, an MLB All-Star is caught with Steriods, a WWE Wrestler kills his wife and Kid on a Steriod Rage.
Quit complaining about how IKE is SOOOO BAADD, like he is going to ruin bass fishing. HECK he is bringing in a whole new generation of anglers through the TV Screen. He is what appeals to kids nowadays and thats the way it is. We NEEEEEED Him in the spotlight. Cause I am seriously worried about how many fisherman are there going to be in 20 years? I truly believe there are
NOT ENOUGH efforts to bring kids into the sport. But IKE is doing that and that is good for what I am concerned about.
I have met Ike and talked to him for a few days while working at a sportsmans show. He is no "Athlete" by any means, 5'8 and like 160 lbs. I am a 5'6 185 lbs. Center and I can probably knock him on his As*. But he is a GREAT FISHERMAN. I got to know him over those 2 days and all I can say is that he is truly all about bringing younger kids into the sport. We would talk and a little boy would walk by with his dad and mom and Ike would stop and make sure to greet them and sign a hat and give it to the kid. They probably didnt even really know who he was. One day, 9 or so member from our bass club were huddled around him and he would totally stop our conversation with him, to talk to the kids and say Hi, because he knew we were already hooked on the sport, so he thought the kids were more important than the 40 year old members, and he was right.
As for the American Flag thing, people make mistakes, when ou have $500,000 on the line, and you just find out you have dead fish and you have an OK Temper. IT happens. THERE ARE FAR MORE WORSE things that are disrespecting the Red White and Blue than Iaconelli.
QUIT COMPLAINING ABOUT IKE LIKE HE IS THE WORST THING THERE IS.
There are FAR WORSE things in this world than a overecstatic bass fisherman.

Re: I just DO NOT get it!
The "Flag" incident is just an excuse for you to dislike him. People disrespect Ol' Glory every day, they wear it on their shirts and shoes, put stickers of it on cars and boats, product labels and advertising, each and everyone of them is a form of disrespect in accordance with US Flag Code and Regulations. As most will say, so what.
His personality is abrasive, his love for fishing is genuine, his temper is human. I don't believe he thought about it, it was an unfortunate incident, that clearly cost him. Get over it, move on, holding grudges takes energy and is never worth it. Don't like the guy, don't watch him. Write him a letter with your feelings, but another bash here is ridiculous and petty.

Re: I just DO NOT get it!
He has single handedly brought our sport to the younger generation and to a totatlly different level. Fishing was really boring to watch and now at least there is a little excitment. Go Ike! you da man. ill vote for ya. like a million times.

Re: I just DO NOT get it!
I do not understand how everyone or rather many talk about how young Ike is..If I am not mistaken he is well on his way to 40, he is not some young 22 or 23 year old kid..I have nothing at all against his fishing abilities and I know he does do a lot of work toward getting young people involved in the sport..Yet his example at times is less than sterling, he is not a god..A kid could do worse than having Ike as a hero, they also could do better..There will always be some controversey with just about anything he accomplishes or is recognized for, be it justified or not..

Take a kid fishing, and don't forget about us older kids either..
Hey Mac
Mac, you mean you never had a snotty-nosed punk sailor like Ike in your Division? I've got a whole bunch of them!!! 6 months to retirement from this!!!! Whewww, can't wait.

Re: Hey Mac
Yeah Scott, I have seen more than one snot nosed punk sailor, a few of them were even officers..Even knew one or two E-7's (not Chiefs) that would qualify..But for the most part the good ones far out numbered them..
So retirement is coming up, you got anything lined up yet..Still waiting to get to go fishing with you..You gonna make it to the Rally..

Re: Hey Mac
No, not making it to the Rally. Don't have anything lined up yet for after retirement, but I am working it, and something I'm sure will pop up. I'm hoping I can find something further north than here. You know, closer to Clear Lake, Shasta, Delta. Hey, by the way, you'd be shocked at the growing number of punks in the Navy, even the E-7's. You know they go through "transition" instead of "Initiation" now right? J.O.'s haven't changed. Still gotta keep them in line, tell them to change their diaper's, you know. Looking forward to hooking up with you for some fishing brother.

Re: Hey Mac
Mike T is absolutely correct. I don't care about an ESPY but IKE is the one who makes them money.
It's just like the rest of the "PUNK-*** Generation" and their horrid music which stays on the radio and even TV now to make all the car and liquor companies that it frequently mentions more and more money... weird how it all works out.
To increase everyone's hopes I am part of this "punk-*** Generation" and I can't stand to be.
Not yelling when I catch a huge fish, opening the car door for my girlfriend every single time she gets in to the car, holding a door for someone else, saying thank you and please, and calling others Sir, and Ma'am are all things I will always do as my act of defiance towards being a part of this generation.
Personally I feel it disheartening that people actually have come to notice a young man who does these things as "outstanding" in the true meaning of the word.

Re: Hey Mac
When I was in the Navy they took care of it with either a "Blanket Party" or the good old fashioned "Greasing". I guess things have changed in the last 25 years or so. I imagine becomming a "Shellback" is like taking a stroll though the park nowadays, sure wasn't when I crossed, I can still feel the sting of those 1 1/2' long fire hose paddles. Nothing straightens a smartass out like running the gauntlett.

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.
