Downloading topo maps to handheld GPS.......How to???

Has anyone tried downloading topo maps to their GPS units, handheld or otherwise? I would like to finally learn how to better use my hand held GPS for fishing and hiking purposes and I think that having some quality Topo maps downloaded into the unit would help out a lot, I'm just having some trouble on where to start. Has anyone been through this and maybe have any tips on where is a good place to start finding these sorts of things? I have a Garmin GPS 76 hand held. Thanks for any help. cya Thad o.
