Castaic Skiers

Post by DeltaBound »

 Cataic water skiers are completely out of hand. I had three ski boats come within 10 ft. of my boat going full throtle yesterday. The rest of the skiers were completly ignoring the bouy markers and the Police were doing absolutly nothing about it. One idiot was pulling his little kid who couldn't have been 6 years old and whiped his boat around so fast that the kid dam near ate the shoreline. What's up with the lawlessness at Castaic?

I saw the same thing yesterday, and every weekend I've been there this summer.
I thought that the law was that a boater had to slow to 5mph within 200' of another boat that wasn't moving, like if it was anchored, moored, or fishing, just like the margin we're supposed to give downed skiers.

Most the people now adays that buy a boat or jet ski's don't even read the laws they just buy something and take it to the lake and starting running it. I was at the wood last sunday and seen a kid that could not even by 8 years old driving a wave runner.

and the 200' deal is a joke, if everyone would obay this law and give 200' to the down water skiers and jets skiers qand people fishing and etc. on the lakes out here there would be no were to run a boat  oh and don't forget about the 100-200' law around the shore line thats 5mph. hell Cal could just make all the lakes here like skinner 10mph

I hear you I was down at San Antonio yesterday and it was a little crazy.I think one of the problem's also is enforcment.

I watched this one boat an 18' older trihull.I counted 13 people two were sitting on the side's in the rear of the boat becouse there wasnt enough room. The lake potrol came up to this boat and all he said, from what I observed, was to tell the two guy's sitting on the side to sit down in the boat.

I am not an expert but I can assure you that boat was not rated for that many people. Then the patrol boat take's off wide open going the wrong way down the lake, nice example buddy.

Oh well I have just come to realize in the summer just get there at daylight and be prepared to leave by noon, hell it's to hot after that anyway.

Yep the skiers at Castaic are out of hand and clueless. The wake board boats throw the biggest wake. Last time I was there a wakeboard boat came within 10 yards of me and I got rocked hard. He did it again and I got rocked even harder. As I was leaving I spotted them stationary eating and I buzzed by them about 10 yards or closer goin wot. They ate my wake and they got rocked hard. It wasn't the right thing to do but it felt real good to get a little payback.

Yeah, payback's a b----, for sure.
When I fish the outer half of Slalom, I expect wakes, and they don't really bother me, since it's only one boat at a time.
But out on the main lake, and at the mouths of all the coves, it's a joke.
I've talked to the lifeguards, and they're as frustrated as the rest of us. Too many holes, not enough fingers.
And the lake Police do patrol, but we've all seen idiots go wide open as soon as the Police boat clears the point.
Seems like some kind of real penalty, like boat impoundment, is the only thing that's going to teach these folks.
Of course, if we have a Pyramid-type tragedy, where someone gets killed, that will tighten things up, for sure.
But why should it have to wait for something like that?

I was fishing Perris last weekend, back behined the Island and where were three of four boats and a few jetskies on full plane in the 5m.p.h. area going back and forth, one of them was pulling a skier, I left that area to fish a nother spot, I found the lake patrol and told him about it, he looked at me and said, yea what can you do, they'll lern when they hit a rock pile, I told him or they'll lern when you give them a ticket, he told me that his hands were full and did't have time

That's why I don't fish much on the weekends. If the county of L.A. raised lake fees in order to pay for more police patrol boats (plus staff) it would send many of us through the roof (and still not solve many of the problems)..

To many boater, too big of an area, too few patrol boats..

The park police can do nothing Just because you or I witness a boating infraction..

Just get out there early and get off by noon...

Casitas is getting it's share of clueless boaters also. I was up there Saturday fishing deadhorse - it was pretty quiet in there and a 20 or 21 foot wakeboarding boat full of half a dozen stoners came in and started swimming. 10 minutes later they dropped a tube in and started pulling it around inside deadhorse and the next cove towards the dam. I got on my cell and called the bait shack with a discription of the boat and crew. I was told they would send the patrol boat out and 45 minute and a hundred laps later still no patrol boat. Hard to understand why they didn't show up - my daughter got yelled at one day for dangling her feet in the water on the end of a dock with no boats around.

I have the solution... Bull Sharks! they live in fresh water and are the #1 dangerous shark to humans! That'll keep the skiers away... and hopefully thin out the stripers too!

Now if we can just get them to migrate up to Castaic somehow!

I am betting we have a few in the Delta... they have found them 2500 miles up the amazon and 60 miles up a river in Australia.

Don't you think there's enough bull floating around our lakes already?
Seriously, I doubt sharks would help, since they'd probably be listed in CA as an endangered species, and we'd have to fish with no hooks.
And if one died they'd close the lake to human contact, since we obviously are a threat to them as a food source.

I jump in on clean lakes... but, the Delta and Clear Lake - no way. I just dump drinking water all over my head!

You are right though, it is nice to jump in on occassion ---- but, I would never jump in on the Delta. Especially now that I know there could be bull-sharks. Did you know Jaws was based on a true story of a bull shark? It was! Besides sharks, I need to keep a line wet as much as possible... what I lack in talent I try to make up for with time efficiency!

Lance - Close, New Jersey in 1916. There were 3 attacks almost 11 miles up river from the coast!

1916 Shark Attacks
Main article: Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916
Despite being 11 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, Matawan was the site of three shark attacks on July 12, 1916. They closely followed an attack in Beach Haven on July 1 and one in Spring Lake on July 6.

An unknown species, most likely a great white shark or bull shark, entered Matawan Creek where it killed a boy, Lester Stillwell; a man, Stanley Fisher; and injured another boy, Joseph Dunn. Over a two-week span in July, up to 100 sharks were killed during the hunt for this shark known as the "Matawan Man-Eater". A great white shark of 8 feet in length was captured and later dissected, confirming it as a possible killer in Matawan, though it has yet to be proven whether the Great White was responsible for the attacks off the shore of New Jersey or for the Matawan attacks. Popular belief is that the Great White was responsible for the Shoreline attacks and a Bull Shark was responsible for the Matawan Creek attacks.

The attacks were the inspiration for the 1975 movie Jaws and is considered to be one of the first attacks known worldwide.

Tom,

Ive seen it before but I already knew why they jumped out of the water. Funny story, when I first met the wife I told her as a kid I was really into Sharks. She asked me (because she saw them jump when on vacation I guess) why do they jump, so I told her, she gave me this "ya ummm ok" look. A couple of months later the first "Air Jaws" was shown on Discovery. I just looked at her and snickered.

Theres only 2 places you want to be if White Sharks are around.
1. On the sea floor, they wont attack you when your on the bottom.
2. In the boat.

You DO NOT want to be in mid water column or bobbin on the surface

I did record "Ocean of Fear", its the story about the USS Indianapolis, but I havent been able to watch it yet

I really have a great deal of respect for the generation that faught in WW2. So much lacking in this generation, Y, P, V or what ever they want to call themselves. They should call themseves the "entitlement" generation. Sorry didnt mean to got on a box

Lance,
I try not to sell our younger generations too short.
If they were faced with the same challenge, they'd rise to the occasion.
The face of young people today that most of us see is our own kids, and T.V..
I don't believe anything on T.V.
I do believe in our kids.

I know what you mean Mark and there are those few that give us hope. But as long there is a Government that's currupt and deceitful in its agenda, ruled by big money rather than by the people that elected it, and a society that encourages that "I'm a victom and nobody counts exept me" view. Any event that happens to this country would never produce the generation that faught WW2.

Lance,
I agree with you that money is the problem.
No money, no cheating, no lieing.
Maybe public finance of public office, taking private money out of politics, is a start.
And requiring publically elected officials to use public education and public health serices would help bring those services back from the dead. After all, those folks control the budgets and provide the oversight for these services.
Imagine what our public schools and public hospitals would be like if Arnold, Anthony, and all the rest of the folks we pay to provide "leadership" actually had to use them.
