Hook Removal Article Paid off for me already!

Post by Guest »

Jim Davis wrote a pro column in the new issue of bass west(available online now - mailing on wednesday) about how to remove a hook from your skin.

Well yesterday I took a couple of new bass fisherman out to Clear Lake and we were throwing crank baits. I told them I had one rule on the boat - don't hook me or each other. Anything else is no biggie. Well about 2 hours into the day I hear a Clink - "OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWE" and new exactly what happened immediately. One of my friends was making a cast and stuck a Lucky Craft Big Daddy Strike 3 in the back of my other friends back. One of the trebles didn't get any skin but was stuck in his shirt. The other treble had one hook buried as deep as it could go into his back. Well, I was able to remove the hook and we continued to fish... but, having proofed that article and taken the pictures for it (hence practicing the technique) made it easy and quick to get the hook out. Just glad it was in his back and not in his face, neck or head!

Be carefull out there guys! And should (actually when) you get a hook in yourself or someone you know.... This method works really well!

Is that the trick that involves some braid? and putting pressure on the eyelet as you pull quickly on the braid?. Had to do it before with Gamakatzu 5/O before worked great. But one time my son was about 6 and had a gitzit jig head buried in him, it was the small ones. And that trick was a little too painful for him. had to go to ER and get it cut out. wasnt very good. People always think they are ok flinging a crankbait on a boat, Its closer than you think!!

I haven't got to read the article yet, but we have one other rule in my boat.... EVERYONE WEARS EYE PROTECTION WHEN FISHING OR WHEN THE BIG MOTOR IS RUNNING. I have seen a #6 fly in a persons eye, it ain't pretty!

Yep that is the trick... Some braid and push on the eye. Believe it or not the guy didn't even know I pulled it out yet. It worked REALLY well. The trick is to make sure you give it a VERY HARD and VERY QUICK yank.... You can't wimp out on it and not pull hard enough - then I am sure it will hurt.

It's a little difficult to pull a hook out of your own hand this way, and extremely difficult when your team partner almost faints at the sight of blood. I ripped it out like a man... Only took me 3 tries as hard as I could, and everyone on the lake knew how many tries as well... still no feeling in that part of the finger! Do the hook removal trick!

I got my partner's worm hook in my chin. Had to turn it until the hook came back out, then cut the barb off. After that, it came out easily, but I bled for a while.

Well when I got a 2/0 treble in my palm one try was enough  and off to the ER.

I keep a pair of vice grips in the boat at all times.

Here is a link which explains it. I know from first hand experience, it works well and far less painfull than using pliers to push it through.

Funny you guys mention this. A buudy and I were Dove hunting on Sat. and talking bass fishing of course, and I had asked him what his pb was. He said it was a 14.9. He said that right before he caught it his partner hooked him in the cheek with a hook. Parter didnt like blood so it took a while to convince him to pull it out. Said that 14.9 made up for the hook in the face big time.
