new western basser
I recently moved here from the south and I am starting to learn the techniques of the west. I have started to drop shot, and havn't thrown the swimbait yet. Are there any techniques I need to learn to catch bass out here?

jig. 3/8 oz blue black, sinko 6" green pumpkin black flack, mm11 on a drop shot, and a triple trout jek bait style, and when all that fails rip a rattle trap. That will cover most of the fishing techniqes I throw, others may have different opinion.

Welcome Parker,
What area of California did you move to? What lakes or what area did you fish in the past?
I know one of the techniques that is vital in California (at least for me) is deep water structure jigs. These are heavy 1/2oz - 1ton football jigs with Double tail Hula grubs. We "drag" these jigs as far down as 50+ feet in our inland resiviors. (Cooch's Orroville story captures this topic, as well as various articles in insideline)

Re: Welcome Parker
thanks for your help. I come from central North Carolina where I fished Jordan, Hyco, and some of the small state owned lakes where you have to use their boats. I am now in San Francisco and i hope to fish clear lake and the delta a lot as well the other lakes in the area. I have been to clear lake once already. My friends are expecting some big fish out of me due to the reputation of the west and I hope I can catch some.

Parker,
I would also like to say welcome to the Nutcase family....boy will YOU be sorry!!!!
Just kidding bro' this is THE greatest sportsman website going. Tony S. (sTony) Lee H. (Gator) and Andy C. (Cooch) let us have a lot of fun, exchange great info about pretty much anything sports related (and some that are not
) and help each other become better fisherman. Try to get on here as much as time allows and read the reports and forum pages and you will learn a lot about our beloved sport.
A Few questions need to be asked:
Do you have a boat or are you planning on getting one? How far are you willing to travel to fish? What lakes are you most interested in?
DO YOU HAVE A LOT OF MONEY TO SPEND ON GEAR?!?!?!?!?!?!
You should think about joining a club to get your feet wet (pun definately intended) and learn about the water you mentioned or whatever water interests you the most. That will get you on the water if you don't have a boat . I'm sure there is a club out here that would suit you and help get you started. I learned so much my first year in our club that I wished I had done it a lot sooner.
Put out a list of lakes you would be willing to fish and see what club best fits you target water. That would get you started.

Re: Welcome Parker
Unfortunatly I am only fifteen so I can't drive anywhere yet so I was going to wait until I am sixteen to join a club. that makes everything more difficult. Tackle wise I have spent my whole life saving and then spending money for the next rod and reel as well as lures and stuff but I have to say the most expensive lure I had ever gotten was a lucky craft until i bought a spro swimbait. Right now we don't have a boat but hopefully we will get one soon. I am willing to go to any lake that isn't more than three to four hours away. I really appreciate all of your help

Re: Welcome Parker
Welcome Parker, Auggie Dog gave you great info.
You'll have to put next July 13 on your calendar, that's the next Pro Teen classic. It's out on the Delta and is a great time. You can if you haven't already read some of the past stats if you click on C O Pro Teen link to your above right. I wish there were some events like that when I was a kid, who knows how much better of a person I could of turned out to be, but that's a long sad story.
There's also a club of teens out on the Delta. Jason C. is the vice president and posts here often, I'm sure he can get you started in the right direction.
Welcome, and don't forget....

Good Call Mike - Teen Classic !
Parker, I would say given your local you will probably be fishin Delta, Clear Lake, and Berry. The first thing I would advice is working on flippin and pitchin mechanics, until you are a machine; cause you will be doing a lot of this
The second thing would be to really commit to the swimbaits- the three listed lakes are great swimbait lakes even though only one is stocked with trout
When I say swimbaits I mean wakebaits, huddlestons, 3:16 Mission, Osprey, etc...
Before your next trip definatly post on this board and let us know when you are going out and ask some questions I am SURE that you will recieve some PM (private messages) in regard to the bite. Until then the Library here is chalked full of good stuff....

Re: new western basser
Welcome to this area Parker, a world renoun fishery, expect a wall hanger from here in your near future. I would suggest you visit the "Guides" section for there are many excellent guides to get you started off on the right foot, such as, Andy Cuchia and Rich Thiel(delta). These fishermen will enlighten you on the appropriate tackle so you don't waste $$$ on inadequate and less useful gear. The other suggestion I have is to team up with someone for the purpose of learning by fishing teams. I don't know what your skill level is, but by visiting this Forum, you can elevate your level even higher. Good luck in your ventures and welcome to the NCBF.
basssin is the way I want to go.

Re: new western basser
Hi Parker, i am 14 so i know where you are coming from. There are alot of lakes in the south bay that offer great bass fishing. As for other lakes you have to visit clear lake and the delta, they are two of the best bodies of water in the country. As for the techniques, you have probably heard most of them already. Swimbaits, deep football jigs, drop shot, and split shot are all very good techniques that may not be used as much outside of california. And i am sure you will catch some big fish.

Welcome to the forum Parker..If there is anyone on this site that will not go all out to assist a kid, he keeps well hidden in the background..You definitely want to try and fish the Pro-Teen event during the summer..Check in on the forum often, there will be numerous offers of "backseats" available to just get out and fish..Some of us have been fishing for over fifty years and we are still learning..That is one of the reasons bass fishing is so darned addictive..If at any time you have a question, make sure you ask here, these guys will get you an answer, probably one with several options..
