Favorite Jig

Post by parker »

I have fished with many different types of jigs (I mean makers not styles of jigs) and I have found some good ones and some I didn't like. I am just wondering what kind of jigs yall like. For me I use different types for different situations but I cant say I have an absolute.

Peppers Pro series football heads are by far my favorite. They have a great hook, and I have a real good hook up ratio with them. Don't even have any of the others any more.

Bass Patrols are a nice stock football jig. A nice stock flipping jig is Strike King Premier Elite. Another good flipping jig is Revenge, those guys make a good one!

But real good jigs are made by me. I tie my own custom finesse jig (used like a football jig) for my local spotted bass.

As for flipping jigs, I use my own custom Arky style jigs, a new grass type jigs I have discovered.

There are alot of nice store bought jigs, but I feel that a handcrafted bait made to my specifications is going to catch more fish than something off the shelf.

Bass Partol, Strike King, Revenge, give em a try.

For deep structure, I like the Rodstrainer Football head jigs. I am partial to the wire weedguards as I really don't like a fiber guard for deeper (30+ feet) fishing where hook penetration gets tougher the deeper you go.
For flippin I like the Rodstrainer banana head Filp-In jigs with the softer moldable fiber weedguard.

For shallow pitching (around docks etc) I like the Rodstrainer Arkie head with wire weedguard.

I just don't like the hard fiberguards at all....it's a confidence thiing....but that's how I feel.

Berserk jig. Gamagatzu hook, football head, living rubber. They make a lake style (smaller profile) or the flippn' style. Baitbarn or the 76 station in Snelling is carrying them. www.berserkbaits.com

Starting using TNT football head in 3/8, brown last January. I have taken fish, including specimens up to 7, and good numbers in virtually every water on which I have used it. Such as, Pedro, Tulloch, Amador, Hogan, Melones, McClure. Give 'em a try. RK

I prefer Toad Thumper. John is a great guy and will make them to your specs. He ties all of my Football head jigs and uses the colors and hooks that I want.

I get a guy to pour mine. I use a football head with a medium wire Gammie hook and weedguard for my open water fishing on rock lakes. The finer wire pentrates better on lighter line. I use a smaller Arky style with a thinner weedguard and medium hook for open water fishingon weed lakes with little or no rock. Easier to fish the grass lines with. For flipping, I have two heads poured. One is called a Poisontail jig; it has a head similiar to the Strike King Elite Denny Brauer Series, with eyes and an Ultrapoint Mustad wide gap hook. The other is a big arky style in 3/4-1 1/2oz for punching really thick grass mats. For finesse stuff, like a puffball jig, I like a light arky head with a medium wire.
For stock jigs, there are lots of good ones. The Strike King Elite Premiers in the Denny Brauer Series are good flippin' jigs. Basspatrol make good football, revenge makes a good one too. Pepper jigs are top notch. I used to like Assalts for finesse jigs. Good stand up head on those.
I started buying plain heads and tying my own because it is cheaper. I go through a lot of jigs. I powder paint my heads for a simple, tough coat. I like using living rubber on open water jigs, and some flippin' jigs for cold water flippin'. I use silicone on flippin' and grass jis cause I fish them most often during the hopt weather, when I found living rubber can melt together if left on the deck too long.

I'm a little latye on this one but hands down T N T Baits, the Wadda jig for the Delta, Arkey casting jig for the lakes and the Football for the lakes last two are custome ties but worth it.

Hand tied with attention paid to the detail try them.

its all about the wahoo jig...most of you probably never heard of them cuz you can't find them anymore? but i swear i've never caught more fish off of one jig, had it tied on season after season. there was an article that once talked about the importance of swimmin' jigs. if you are used to a bottom retrieve or just bouncing the jig along, you should try this deadly tactic. although, it takes the right jig to swim with, especially in heavily weeded areas, like i fish. the line tie must be perfect, the angle of the hook must be just right when it's moving through the water, and strangely enough the head should curve in the opposite direction you would traditionally see. this is certainly not a jig for every application, but none the less my favorite.
