Lake Oroville Guide sought

Post by 1098NHI »

I will be up in Oroville on business in a couple of weeks, on a weekday, and am looking for a guide for a half day or whole. Flying in, so I'll need a guide who'll supply tackle. Heard this is a good lake, but have to leave my boat at home this trip.

Can anyone recommend a guide up there? Thanks for any help in advance![/b]

There are only a few true working, licensed and bonded guides on Oroville at this time. There are several that will take you out a go fishing but only a small minority that have dotted the i's and corssed the t's to be fully certified.

Larry Hemphill is one and Ron Gandolfi is another. Sure there are some great sticks up there that know the lake real well and can show you a good time. But when it comes to excepting monies to legally guide onthat lake the list is a short one at best.

Also, keep in mind that unless the water you're fishing leads unabated to the ocean, you do not have to have a captain's license to guide on lakes in California. The Delta is another matter entirely.

Larry and Ron are both supporters of this site that have worked out their dealings with the powers that be at Oroville as well as with the state licensing agency and they have their bonds in place as well.

you can find and verify if a guide is licensed in California here:

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/pdffile ... delist.pdf

A guide who holds a C.G. Captains license would need to be verified through the Coast Guard I assume.

DD-

These types of bonds are a general class of surety bonds required of a person or entity to obtain a license or a permit in any city, county, or state. These bonds guarantee whatever the underlying statute, state law, municipal ordinance, or regulation requires. They may be required for a number of reasons, for example the payment of certain taxes and fees and providing consumer protection may be required as a condition to granting licenses related to selling real estate or motor vehicles and contracting services.

Sounds like Chad has done his due diligence. It really doens't matter what his age is it's more important what he's offering his clients and whether or not they perceive value from what he's offering. Just because he's a young guy doesn't mean he can't do the job. I've seen plenty of guides get out performed in tournaments. That surely doesn't mean that thye can't offer folks a great value on a day of fishing.

I'm not going to make any comments about the legal, bonding or insurance requirements of providing guide services. However, I would like to say that I was at Oroville a while back and stuggled for the first few hours. Luckily Chad happened to call me to talk about delivering a few rods I was buying from him. I told him that I was struggling and he provided some very good information that helped me locate and catch fish that day. I really appreciated his help because without Chad's advice I think it would have been a very dismal day for me.

Congrats Chad -- You might want to update your web site to mention that you are liscenced/bonded.

-- That really goes along ways in someone seeking a guide.

......... Also- You can PM Gator if you might be interested in advertizing your service on WB in the guide link.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Actually Dan, that's only a partial list of the licensed guides in California. There is a box on their annual form that we select if we want to be posted on their website or not. The absolute best way to verify if the guide is licensed or not, is to ask them for their four digit license number, then confirm it with DFG via an e-mail or phone call. Most of the reputable bass guides that I know with websites, all have this number displayed on their pages somewhere.
