This event should still be cool, id do anything to be able to spectate this....but

Its not really what we had hoped for, at least me....with no long and siemental this tournament lacks the big name guys.... i hope rob belloni, bassindon, and supermat get a shot because between those 3 guys there arent much better up north

but like i said without Long and the bbz master its kind of a let down

I talked at length with Mike today....

Post by Pete Marino »

and he told me that he has prior commitments so he will NOT be at that tournament. Mike doesnt need to fish a one day tournament to know that hes that best BIG BASS guy in California, and maybe the world. It will be a cool win for whoever wins it but that belt doesnt mean they are the best in California like some people think. It will mean that they are the best in that "Tournament", that day... Mike and Bills resumes speak for themselves, they dont need another tournament win to prove they are the best. If either of those guys fished the event and won it, people would say "they are the best, they are supposed to win it". But if they got beat, "Guys would say, what Happened to the Big guns,,they got beat and so and so is the new Big Bass king." Its almost a lose lose situation for those guys in my opinion...

The odds in Vegas just went up for Shawn Bailey to win this thing with two of his biggest threats not in the field....But its still anybodies ball game in my opinion....

I also spoke to John Kerr at length today and he said he is IN for that event. Hes never been to Casitas and has no idea where to fish but hes anxious for the challenge and looks forward to fishin some new water. He may not even prefish...

And a little side note...Mike told me that he thinks the best BIG BASS guy in San Diego is John Kerr. That was the most Humble and Modest thing I've heard in a long time.. Mike is a CLASS ACT!
And Because John is also a class act and a very humble guy in his own right, I'm rooting for him to win that tournament.

Well said Pete.

Both John and Mike are studs. Ive been beat down by them for years down here in SD, they are sticks..... They are both great friends. Wait for the next one to come along, in another 5-6 years, thats John's son Jordie... He's already turning into one hell of a stick, and he cant even drive yet. Then we will have to try and beat Long/Kerr and another Kerr.....

Well I would like to say something here. Its not about ego or who is the best or who has something to prove. It's about going out and giving your ALL in a sport that we all love thats it. If it goes your way you win, simple as that. I mean come on guys you know how fishing is by now.
This was to be the biggest tourney of "Big fish names" out there. By some not going now its like knocking off a few blocks off the top of a Pyramid, Now it's just not as big. Boooooooooo. It would have helped make this a great show for everyone.
To say lets see who is the best Big fish guy is part of the hype.
If I won 5 in a row you will NEVER here me say... I am the best or better then you.
I just love fishing.
I am grateful to get the chance to do this. Thanks Orso, Ken and Ron C.

It still is Don. The best big bait guys are still in this thing, including you.

While I agree that one single HBC event might not determine who the best trophy bass angler is, a continuing series of them certainly will. As the popularity of this series grows (and it will), you will begin to see the same names consistently at the top, regardless of where the events are held. Then we will begin to see who the best trophy bass anglers really are.

Ask yourself this (rhetorical) question: Why on earth would anyone who is revered as a big bait specialist who has been given a golden opportunity to showcase their talents (and their sponsors) in an event that was tailor-made for them withdraw from this event? The answer is obvious (or at least it should be).

As for Mike Long - Contrary to what you may have heard or want to believe, Mike Long told me personally that he withdrew from this event because he has one house in escrow and is currently building his new house. He indicated that he really wanted to be a part of this historical event and that it pains him to not be able to do so, but he had to keep his priorities straight; for which I commend him. (Those of you who know Mike know that he is VERY dedicated to his family). He added that NOBODY talked him out of fishing this event and that he has every intention of fishing future HBC events.

The drama on this forum never ceases to amaze me. Those who frequently make the most noise or make a habit of bad-mouthing just about everything are usually those who are not even involved with whatever it is that they are bad-mouthing. Although there were 13 guys who camped out overnight to get into the inaugural Heavyweight Bass Classic (including several guys from Northern California), the Angler side of HBC-1 did not sell out until 9 am. This certainly allowed for those who refused to camp out overnight every opportunity to get into this event a good two hours after the Bass-A-Thon doors opened, yet they did not.

On a more positive note, I will be posting the full Angler field for HBC-1 within a few days. I will tell you this much – it is DEFINITELY a “Who’s whoâ€
