Favorite Jig & Why?

Post by Steve Ericksen »

I'm extremely bored at work today and can't think about anything other than Clearlake, which is where I'll be going this weekend.

So I thought I would pose a question:

What's your favorite jig & trailer (not necessarily color as this obviously varies) & why. This excludes flippin' jigs, as I'm more concerned with which jigs you drag, hop etc.

What's so great about the TNT Wadda Jig, I haven't seen them yet or talked to anyone that's used them.

EXACTLLY what Brian said.

I have only missed one fish on A Wadda at the delta. I used to go through around 5 to 10 jigs A day( ROCK&STICK FISH) but wiht the Wadda I can get them out of just about everthing. I have some that have NO PAINT left on them. One other thing I like about the Wadda is that almost every fish is stuck through theupper hard part of the fishes mouth so once hooked fish stay hooked. MY OPINION.

LAKES Rodstrainner Football. I love the light wire hooks they use. I can down size my fishing line on the real clear water lakes and still get A GREAT HOOKSET!!! Rodstrainner also makes this funny brown color from time to time that seems to put more fish in the boat than A normal brown color. HARD TO FIND. Phil's in Shasta only had them in 1/4 oz last time I was there.

I've been playing with T-N-T footballheaded jigs A little and trying see what works for me. I think I need to find the right color in the T-N-T for my application.

The Dirty Jigs Tackle "finesse football" just about everywhere and the "No Jack" jig when the weeds get thick. Curt takes the time to tie as many as 10 colors into his skirts, they're awesome!

You should give Bobby D's a try then. They are powder coated and the paint will not chip off on the rocks. The one on my rod right now, I have been using since Oct and still has all of the paint. It does have a lot of teath marks in it, but no chips  They also have rattles in them which (IMO) is very inportant in the winter when the fish are sluggish and the water is uaually dirty.

Mike,
Well I MIGHT just do that. I think you should give me A day guide trip on the delta and show me how well those Bobby D's work.

My current fav would be either a Bobby D's or the new style Rodstrainers. Wadda's are just as good but I prefer a rattle... All three are the same price, have an almost identical arkie head design, a good hook and hand tied round rubber skirt... the major diff IMO being the style or lack or rattle..

rat-l-backs and ratlin weapons are top notch too

lots I haven't tried yet....Peppers look good as do the junk grenade's

hello,

even before the wadda was launched i was already fishing a jig with same profile as the wadda. i have tried a few other brands and style jigs. there is something special about that wadda jig.

the only time i may not throw it is if i wanted a jig with a bigger hook. i do add a large variety of different size trailers and i need a bigger hook from time to time. as terry mentioned, the larger hooks has left me on my knees in awww due to slack line, fish getting away.

on the river and clear lake i throw the wadda for both. even Folsom , Sonoma and berryessa

the arkie head design in my oppinion is the best all around jig to throw. i try not to get caught up in some many different style jigs.
i like the look of the pepper jig in a arkie style, tru tungsten in a arkie style. i have not seen the others.

i got a lot of different jigs in different style heads, the arkie style is the best. i will add a rattle to my jigs. when it comes to clear lake and the river i use the exact same stuff.

if i am fishing any jig but a arkie head jig it is going to be a spider jig.

For Clear Lake there are only three jigs that I use.

The TNT wadda jig covers most of my Clear Lake needs from structure to flippin and pitchin.

I also use a custom - Puff Ball (style) jig in a football head for the finness jigs and a standard Hula Jig for the rocks and structure.

As far as trailers, Yamamoto in the purple, brown purple or Green pumpking watermelon red have always produced for me at clear lake. The Paca Chunk is another sleeper bait that has been great for me there this past year as well esp in the Green/Blue Flake (I forget the name but I think its Ocochobee)

This time of year, I would also have a Big Hammer or a 3/4oz swimbait on deck and slow roll it the same places you are throwing the jig....but shhhh fishermen are suppose to keep secrets!

I'm very narrow minded when it comes to both ClearLake and the Delta. I use an arkie head jig with a weed guard, period. It's really the only effective bait you can fish under all conditions with the vast array of cover and structure in both ponds.

Sure, there are times when ya can use a football head on the flat ledges and areas with no weeds on the bottom. But ya can't turn around and toss that weedguardless football head into the tulles, a bush, downed tree or the grass and expect to git it back, much less git it to where the fish are deep in the cover. Therefor, using the ole KISS theory, I keep it simple and have one jig tied on, that I can use everywhere up there.

As far as trailers go, that single tailed Yamamoto grub is not just a personal favorite of mine, but that of many anglers, and the bass up there too. I think if you poll the tackle shops, you'll get a much better idea of what ALL the anglers are really buying, than the opinions of 100 fishermen on the internet. Pork certainly works well in the winter time, and I had some really great success up there last spring, summer and fall, using the Zoom Super chunks! You can't have JUST ONE favorite, but several favorites that all work better at different times of the year.

When it comes to jigs, yer gonna always git loads of different responses when it comes to the manufacturer of any particular jig. Personally, that's not so important to me as it is to have a functional bait in yer hands that you have confidence in. Everybody's fishing styles are different. We have different body shapes and characteristics as humans, that cause us to set the hook differently, us different rod types and lengths, specific patterns and areas we prefer to fish, as well as our own personal preference in lines. All these variables, will come into play when choosing a jig, or finding a jig, that best suits your style of jig fishing. As I've said for years, you should initially choose several differnt jigs by different vendors, use them all at various times and conditions. You will then begin to see which ones work best for you, building the confidence in it to where, THAT's Your personal preference now.

i would have to say one of my stand up/swim jigs i got from one of the guys who makes basstrix...i havent seen a jig like it and he gave it to me at the san mateo show and said they couldnt sell them for patend reasons...but that paired up with a blue gill basstrix for bed fishing in spring and a regular old football head with just about any 5" worm in darker natrual color

Berserk jigs, fine living rubber, gamakatzu hook, football head, colors match up the seasonal crawdads, on their site you can mix and match colors to customize your jig. www.berserkbaits.com
As for trailers yamamoto twin and single tail grubs. Smallie and sweat beavers.

Ganns is producing one of the top jigs on the market today. Awesome head designs, agressive hooks to match, and great colors. I use plastic trailers almost exclusively on my jigs any more, Yamamoto twin tails, pacu craw type trailers, etc.

hope this helps

I use to like the Bass Stalker and Skinny Bear jigs, for rubber skirts. Revenge makes a great silicone flippin' jig. Now I make my own jigs, so thats my favorite now. I build a jig for about 15-25 cents compared to the $2-4 I'd pay for a store-bought jig. I'm having this mold for my flippin' jigs made that is pretty cool called a Poison Tail. It uses a Mustad Ultra Wide Bite jig, real sharp and hold a trailer well. It looks a lot like the newer Strike King Denny Brauer flippin' jig, but has a flatter bottom as opposed to the ridge the Strike King jig has.
I like just about anything for a trailer. Pork in cold water, and just about anything else will do in summer. Yamamoto double tails, Sweet Beavers, Brushogs, chunks, craws, used'em all. All catch fish.

The TNT Wadda jig for the Delta and the TNT custom tied for the lakes. No matter what body of water I'm on theres three rods with jigs tied on in my boat. I've been fishing these jigs for more that six years now I've tried others but they never stay in my jig box for very long. As for rattles I add them when I think they are needed and I have yet to find a powder coat finish that will not chip when bounced off rocks

Delta 3/8 blk/brown rubber 1/2 oz same and 1/2 blk/blk living rubber

Lakes Fine rubber arkey 3/8 or 1/2 oz Fine rubber FB 1/4 oz and fine rubber FB 3/4 oz

I have an assortment of Peppers and Waddas ..... but mostly in 3/8 oz.

I listen clostely to mah BrothA Coochster -- I will only be buying 1/2 oz. Wadda's from now on.

The Peppers I fished with got cought up alot on the rocks ALOT. It wasted alot of fishing time and scared alot of fish as well getting up to retrieve it-- So I switched to the Wadda and I only got stuck up once more ........when I pitched up to shallow.

-- Looking at them both closely that night -- I always trimmed the weed guards on the Pepper's -- The Wadda's I never have to toutch and they are good to go once you tie them on.

Also I was told that 1/2 is the only way to go on the Delta/CL -- You want to feel that Jig on the bottom ASAP -- and always.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

I make my own jigs. Footballs with owner light wire hooks for spot lakes. Arkies with either gammi 111, mustad ultra point (med wire 90 degree hook) or the 291 hook if there in cover. Trailers I use the zoom chunk. The ones I make for myself are simple old school stuff. I make jigs for a lot of people and everyone wants something a little different. What is importain about your jig is the right amount of material trimmed right, good hooks, hand tied, and the right weed guard for what your fishing. 90% of the time a brown purple arkie or football in 3/8 or 1/2 ounce with a zoom chunk works as good as anything else.

Bully Baits football jigs!! they are hand tied custom to each customers order. Gami hooks, soft weedguards, and are done in any color combination, the best looking powder coated heads that are extremely durable and a sold at a fair price. Sprayed grass is my favorite with a sprayed grass beaver..

I've always been a fan of Arkie jigs in the Delta and football jigs in the lakes. I've been through tons and tons of jigs, in the end I kept going back to making my own just how I wanted them. Just this week picked up some California Reservoir Lures and these patterns are absolutely sick, not to mention you can also order custom ones as well.
