Pro-Am payout question???

Post by straitline »

In A two day tournament the entry is $500.00 for the pro side.. You win the tourny... Would you rather have A boat certificate ($30,000 boat) or take home A check for $20,000 that day?

for me cert. If i could sell it for 25 then pay taxes on that i would make more than paying taxes on 2o grand. everyone forgets about uncle sam with payouts. The more you get the more ya pay. LOL

If the boat retails for $30k you will be lucky to get $20k and you have to go though the trouble of selling the boat. Then the you will be 1099ed for taxes on a $30k boat and you have to have it adjusted down.

Give me cash.

The make of the boat is also a big consideration, but if I had the option I would take the cash.

Either way works for me... but, keep in mind.

How many boats has Gary Dobyns won? 39... I know that number.

How much money has he won? I have no idea.

Winning a boat is a status thing!! So for me as an Angler - I want the boat! As if it will ever matter for me!

I have no guess on how many boats he's sold but, probably more than any other non-boat salesman on the planet!! He's certainly great for Ranger and Evinrude!

I seen KVD has won over 2 million dollars and no word on the amount of boats Tom. I want my biggest spoon out for this one but Kelly Jordan is using it!

Guy - Good point... but, KVD is on a different level than regional fishing. Either way cash or boats doesn't really matter to me as an angler. I just hope for the day to say I am a boat winner. Saying I am a tournament winner would just not be as telling to me.

To each his own... I surely could be the odd ball on this but, I believe that how many boats you have won has been a measuring stick for west coast pro anglers for as long as I have been in this sport (which I admit isn't all that long compared to most).

I THINK THE BOAT IS ONLY THE ICING ON TOP OF IT ALL, WHEN YOU WIN A BOAT, IT SEEMS THERE IS ALOT OF CAKE UNDER IT ALL (MONEY $$$)... IT ALL COMES IN TIME...........IF IT'S YOUR TIME !?

straitline,
In my day job, i work with/for a lot of startups in the Bay Area. A great friend gave me some advice a long time ago that i still hold onto today.

When given the option of CASH or a piece of paper (i.e. - boat certificate, stock options, etc) that promises something good in the future, always take the cash hands down! You don't have any idea what the future brings, but the cash is a guaranteed value and can be invested to grow. Ask any Wall Street banker what he wants, stocks or cash, and they will always take the cash first.

Now there are always plenty of guys who want the status of winning that boat (Tom :D ) and others who think they can sell a certificate valued at 30K for a mere 25K (Vince :D ), but day in and day out the 20K in cash is money in the bank.

Yes, some have cashed in on some great stock options in the business world, but there are far fewer than is led to believe. It's the same for winning a boat in the fishing world. It looks good on your resume, but it's never a really lucrative money making thing for most guys. Some yes, but most no! The value just isn't there.

Take the cash and enjoy it!
