Looking to Repower My boat

Post by cleb19 »

Well sunday I lost the number 2 piston in my Opti 225 and warranty expired a couple of months ago, go figure. Not only did I lose the number 2 piston in the Powerhead I ruined the block, the cost wouldnt be worth it to me by the looks of the motor market. If I wanted to have it done I would do it right and have the whole powerhead redone, Mercury wants 6500 just for the power head 1000 bucks for the core of the block not including labor or parts from my mechanic lol. If anybody knows of a good condidtion preferrably with some warranty on her, Mercury or Evinrude 200hp or 225hp shoot me a pm with price and condidtion. Thanks guys what a bummer right before I leave for havasu in 2 days luckily I have some great friends and got a back up boat. Thanks again guys.

Been there.... Lost #1 cylinder in my 225EFI 2 years ago. Had the motor custom built by Eric Simon @ simonmotorsports.com into a 335HP Balanced and Blueprinted beast. Cost me a chunk of change, but was well worth the investment imo. Did you talk with any Merc reps to see if they could help you out with the warranty date? Check out Ebay, sometimes there are some good deals on new and used Optimax's

Been there too... holed a piston on my 150 Johnson a couple of years ago. Looked around for a used/rebuilt, affordable motor for quite a while until a buddy in my club got a new boat and parted out his old one. I re-engined my boat with the Mariner (by Mercury)off of his...I had to change out the throttle/shift cables and control, the wiring harness, trim gauge, oil tank and lines, etc... bottom line is, stay with the same make of motor that you have if at all possible.

In the course of looking around for a new motor, I came across this link:

www.iboats.com

Might help, good luck

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Chad

Give me a call if the motor is only a couple of months out of warranty Mercury is normally good about covering things if it relates to some normal issues.

Like 492Slayer (Mark), I had my 200 EFI built by Eric Simon. It runs like a top. Eric has been building Optimax motors too. He does all of the machining and cylinder work in-house. He also will determine and repair the cause of your failure. Try calling Eric at 760-440-9334, if you haven't already. You could even have him add in the boyesen reeds like the ones in the 225XS Optimax.

I bought a 1986 371V Ranger with a 175 merc, it had a blown piston and I had a guy rebuild it, now it has 4 new sleeves and 6 new pistons and I am rolling, my guestion is why are these motors going, I can see a 1986 going after 19 years but why do 4 year old motor go or newer? I was talking to a guy at Red Bud launch ramp at Clear Lake and his 6 month old 250 Opti spun the top right off it, he had the cover off and showed me, he had just did it. He said he never red lined it because the computer will record it and it will voide the waranty. Are we just to hard on these motors? It it the gas? Is it the oil we are using? It is to spendy to be buying new motor or having them rebuild. Any mechanics out there with advise?

My 2003 Optimax just blew up. Mechanic said the injector went out and leaned out the #6 piston which broke and damaged the powerhead. Was looking at $9700 to fix but its under warranty until March 08. Got lucky on that one.

It's improtant to keep your injectors clean and performing to specs. Contact Eric Simon @ http://www.simonmotorsports.com or 760-440-9334 to get yours cleaned and tuned. He does top notch work. Tell him Mark sent you.
