Which flourocarbon line for spinning reel?

Post by Louie »

I have 2 spinning reels setup for my dad to use on the delta and I keep having trouble with the line springing off after a cast. I have been using 14 pound vanish or 15 pound seaguar flourocarbon. Are any of them better for spinning reels?

Thanks,

Louie

Louie,
Unfortunately, no. There really isn't a true Fluorocarbon that will be sans maintenance. There are some that are lower in maintenance than others. Your best bet for the Delta would be going with a braided mainline and topshotting the fluoro by a coupla feet.

Hope this helps.

In my attempt to get "the best of both worlds" I like using YoZuri hybrid on my spinning setups. I only use them for dropshot and darthead but 6 lb. YoZuri works well for me.

For all the brands of flourocarbon that I've tried, you'll need a large diameter spool to keep 14-15 pound test from uncoiling. My 17 pound flouro doesn't even cast very well on a baitcaster. But, I love the sensitivity. I only use up to 10 pound flouro on the small spinning reels (2500's) and 6-8 on the really small ones (1500's). I've found that the P-Line 100% Flouro is good all-around. It is a bit on the springy side, but it is really strong. In my experience, the Vanish was less prone to uncoiling, but I had some problems with that line breaking and stopped using it. The Yozuri hybrid is really limp and casts very well, but not being 100% flouro, it has more stretch in it. My buddy keeps the Reel Magic spray (silicone) in his boat, and I found that helped a lot on the spinning reels.

If you are going to use a spray use the K.V.D. Line conditioner.
Much better than reel magic.
I am not going to sell you on any line but I can inform you that Sunline sniper is great on spinning up to 10 pound. Also make sure you use an oversized spool for your line and management will be much better.

I mainly use light line for spinning reels but a good trick if you want to use bigger line is underspool it. It will help but won't fix the problem completely. Make sure he closes the bail with his hand and grabs the line.

First 14# FLUORO on spinning gear?! There aren't many nylon mono that would work at that pound test.

For fluorocarbon, I would recommend stepping down to 10# vanish (what I've been using) ... if you MUST, get a spinning reel with a bigger diameter spool ... US Reels have some interesting gear that have bigger (larger diameter) spools. I'm using 2500 (8#'s) & 3000 (10#'s) series spinning gear also.

I really dig triple fish...I mainly use flouro. on spinning reels and like the way it handles...Ray did give some EXCELENT advice, do try an
over size spool and the KVD line conditioner to me is better
than reel magic.
