Good reliable place to work on a Mercury?

Post by bassrockstar »

Was just looking for any inside info on a good place that you all might have had work done on your Mercurys. I live in the east bay area but anywhere between the bay and the delta would be awesome. Was having a great day out of Franks today with a couple of 6's and a couple other bites until the starter went out. It's killing me even more knowing I'm out of commission now that the bite is picking up. Any help would be appreciated....thanks

Lube your bendex gear shaft.

If your starter is just making this spinning noise and not turning the motor over spray some lube onto the shaft where your spring and gear are located.

Sometimes you have to get a screwdriver and move the gear to compress the spring to break the sticky stuff free.

If it is really out (starter that is) then replace or rebuild it. If it is spinning then lube the shaft(as mentioned) or sometimes it is caused by low battery power. As for a good mechanic in your area, I do not know. Bill K :)

Performance Marine Specialties in Oakley
(925) 757-8285 Mechanic is Dave, He has done some warranty work on my motor and I really like the place, I used to go to boat Masters they are cool too but costly, also Dave is right on the water and can go for a test drive after he makes repairs.

Hey, I had a 150 Black max that the starter went out and I took it to a starter repair place, sorry it was a long time ago and I don't have the name but there are a ton in the bay area, but these are easy to take off and easy to repair, if you take if off yourself you can save $60.00 to $120.00 per hr and don't have to tow your boat all over the place.

I have 3 kids and a wife at home, I know how to save money:)

For repairs I can not do, The Boat Dock at Discovery bay 925-634-5761 (Delta) Robert over there worked on my Yamaha and fixed it, I had taken it to another shop and they could not figure out what was wrong, he worked on my Skeeter I used to have also, I broke off a bolt and they healey coiled it for me and I was on my way.

Thanks for all the input guys. Fortunately I was able to fix it myself this morning and she's up and running again. Hopefully I'll find that bite I was on two days ago when I head out tomorrow.

yeah for some reason the shaft just got stuck in the down position but was still spinning. I pryed it a little bit and it came free then lubed that gear shaft. Started it up about 15 times throughout the day and was working fine so hopefully that's all it was.
