Who has a 797 si Humminbird?

Post by Narcdogk9 »

How do you like it and is the screen big enough for the si feature. I have a 787c2 up front and was thinging of replacing my 168 Garmin with the 797 or Lowrance 520. Would you buy another 797 now that you have one?

Thanks Rod
It was cuff'm and stuff'm. Now it's catch'm and release'm

go with the 997 at a min... The screen on the 797 is not big enough to take full advantage of the side imaging features... I had both the 797 and the 997, the 797 doesn't compare. If you can hold out and don't mind spending the extra money, go with the 997 or better yet the new 1197.

I have both a 797 and 997. The 997 has a bigger (wider) screen and is a little easier to see. I have the 797 up front and love it. The 997 is on the console. I am sponsored by Humminbird (very happy about it) and I can have my chioce of units. I like the 797 upfront and the 997 on the console. I will order the same units for my next boat. If I can answer any questions please let me know.

Finally someone! Does every unit with SI have GPS? I want a 997 on the console and a unit up front with SI with no GPS. Do they have something like that?

How the hell can you read that little screen on your bow at that elevation?

I am not positive on the no GPS. Why can't you just not hook up the GPS, but it would be available if you ever changed your mind or sold the unit? I know you have a good answer, maybe $$$$$. I wouldn't think it could be that much. Sorry crappy answer, I know.

Tobey, you are a wise-***. That is wise-guy. You have a dirty mind.

The 797 is a great unit for up front. Chad Martin talked me into it and I have been pleased with that setup. When fishing rocks, breaks, our structure it works great. You can position the boat 20-30 feet off it and make short cast . I don't thank you will be dissapointed with this setup. The 997 is a better choice our a large screen lowrance for the console. Good luck with your decision.

For what it's worth I'm also really happy with my 787c2. Hi-res display, plenty of power, solid GPS features. In fact, I'm looking for another one.

If anyone has a used 787c2 they want to unload, I'm interested.

So the 981c si doesnt have GPS, but if you link it to a 997 dash unit will the gps work on it?

As far as I can tell, the 981C does support GPS. But the closeout unit does not come with the GPS antenna. You can buy a GPS antenna for around $100 I believe.

But I do have a question for those who have bought that closeout unit. I understand that it does come with a transducer. But which one? Will THAT transducer mount on the trolling motor??!! A new trolling motor transducer is ~$250 for that unit!!

I dont know yet. But the lowest price I found is 180.00 for that transducer. I just called and should have asked, mine shipped today. Cant I just mount the ducer up towards the front on the inside of the hull? I'd rather have it there then hangin from my trolling motor.

Well I guess its this one, oh well I guess it will work out for me. When I buy my 997 Ill just get it without the ducer.

Good news ... was looking over the Humminbird site and found this (no need to buy another transducer):

Transducer Exchange Program

All transducer-equipped Humminbird products come standard with a transom-mounted transducer. However, we also offer these optional models:

* Puck
* Angled Puck
* Trolling Motor
* Portable
* Thru-Hull (plastic or bronze)

If you'd prefer one of these, you're welcome to exchange, through our factory, yours for no charge if the new transducer is of equal value to the one that came with your unit. If it's priced higher, you simply pay the difference. Call our Customer Resource Center at 1-800-633-1468 for pricing.

Some retailers also choose to carry models without transducers and stock a variety of the above mentioned transducers. This option is available only on our 700 and 900 Series of products. Check with your local retailer to see if they are participating in this program.

If you are exchanging transducers, please check your Operations Manual to make sure the transducer you choose is compatible with your fishfinder. In addition, make sure you have all the necessary mounting accessories.

The transom-mounted transducer you are returning must be new and unassembled, and the mounting hardware must accompany it. You must include payment, as well as your shipping address and phone number. Please allow 10-14 working days to process transducer exchanges.

I just got back from the Cabela's store in Reno and while I was there I stopped to check out the new 1197... wow that thing was BIG! but it also come with a BIG price tag at about $3,000, $1100 more than the 997.

Sure was nice though!

I currently have the 997 and it is great. I cannot wait till I can get the new one!

I almost bought the 797c2 Si (I found one about $850 shipped)... but after thinking about it, I figure that the extra little bit for this 981c is worth it (mainly for the bigger screen). So I ordered it this AM :D This is going on the bow, so the GPS is not as important. If it becomes a need, I figure that I can get an antenna for $100 or so. I even bought the additional 3 year warranty ... now, just waiting for it to show up next week!! :twisted:

What part does the 981c need for GPS? I might just buy one more for the console. That is if if the GPS option isnt much money.

If you link it to the console unit that has GPS, the front unit gps should work in sync with the console......

I believe it's ~$100-150 ... here's a place that sells the GPS antenna for $92 and one that sells it for $100. They both seem to indicate their unit works with the 981C, but list different part numbers! Might want to call Humminbird to confirm which is the antenna (#406340-1 or 405780-1; Humminbird AS-GR16 or AS-GR4 GPS Antenna)!!

Just to help you guys out on protecting your graphs, check out www.berserkbaits.com. He can make you a custom graph cover. If its not mounted into your consoles, if its mounted externally it will work. I have ordered mine. Lifetime warranty.

Hey guys I couldn't resist jumping in. The 797 is incredible and you do not have to hook up the gps if you don't want to. But I just saw the new 1197 unit working down at Havasu last week and I gotta tell you that unit is the bomb. You can read it from 20 yards away. If you all have not seen it you have got to check it out. "Lowrance Who"!!!!!!!!

Don, from what I've read you can. But it's only for the 'normal' sonar. For the side imaging, you'll need their side imaging puck!
