My ONE best fishing tip or advice???

Post by BassketCase »

I was talking to a buddy (that is fairly new to fishing) today and he asked me a great question. He asked me, “What is the one most important lesson or tip that really helped me take my fishing to the next levelâ€

My best one Tip or lesson would have to be the hour or so lesson good ole' Cooch gave me after a C.O. Pro Teen Event back in 2004. I was about to go back east to fish in the Jr. BassMasters Classic and only been fishin for bass for about two years. I really had no clue how to fish that JIG so after the event I went up to hip and asked "Cooch, do you think you cant give me a little lesson on how to fish a jig, I have a feeling it will do very well back east." And being the great guy that he is put off cleaning up and even got whacked while he was teachin me. I will never forget that and now I have a hard time puttin that jig down!

My tip would be, "Never stop asking what that one thing is."

Never get discouraged.

If the fishing is tough, do not let it get to you. I noticed that on a few trips where the bite was really tough I got discouraged and kind of started just going through the motions and not putting much thought into what I was doing. I was half assing it and not fishing as hard as I could have been which could have resulted in a better day.

I fished yesterday and I had 3 in the boat before my buddy landed one. He was snagging left and right, he broke off a monster and he was getting pissed. I was constantly telling him not to let it get to him and that we still had time and to keep fishing hard. He was mad, but he kept at it and he nailed the two biggest fish of the day with a half hour left to get off the lake. He stuck it out and never let up and got some good fish.

Best tip I've gotten so far was, "get a book."

I'm still not very good, but I am starting to understand Bass behavior now, and their seasonal patters, which I think will be the keys to me getting better and throwing the right thing in the right place at the right time.

ENJOY every moment of it..........

Look at the blackbird on the tulle, or the deer gettign a drink of water, or the sunset. Appreciate the moment, love the sport and be thankful your doind what you are doing at that exact moment, fishing. Now not to be all philisophical and not practical... Fishing that way is the key to success as well. Think about this cast, not the next or the last. Concentrate on the next bite, not the ones you caught or want to catch. Let the fish talk to you, get in tune with the rythym of the water and follow your instincts. But mostly do it because you love it.

About 11 years ago when I first joined Bassbusters.

"Keep your line wet"

I still see and hear about the guy on the back of the boat constantly tying something else on or just screwing around. :-(.

My best advice to give is this:

"Fish the moment, not history, and let the fish tell you what they want!"

I learned this lesson the hard way by counting on my day 1 success to fish on day 2 the exact same spot. What I failed to notice on that 2nd day was that the fish moved about 30yds away. While i sat in 1 spot protecting my honey hole waiting for them to bite, boat after boat approached me catching my fish on the bank in front of me.

I was just too stuck with my day 1 success not to see what was happening right in front of me and I missed my opportunity to fish the moment!

Good Luck,
Kopper_Bass

"Have Fun"
Noluk was close, but the one thing that surpasses all others is to have fun. If it is not fun, why do it. We as fisherman find all kinds of things to compain about...the bite, the skiers, the guy who is fishing 'my spot', etc. Does it really matter at the end of the day if you have a great time?

I agree with Mike. Keep a Log!

I use FishNLog Professional Suite at www.Taysys.com

Just by keeping it you will learn to be observant, and you will learn to think about why you were successful or not. Over time you will reveal seasonal patterns and habits of bass, and your time on the water will be more productive.

"Never forget your fishing license... It's the most important part of your tackle. Without it, you can't even pick up your rod." - fishfan aka Jeff

My team partner made that comment to me 23 years ago, I still have yet to hear any "one" thing regarding fishing that is more important than those words of wisdom. I have thought about those words every time I have fished since. It was then that I started keeping my license with my main tackle so it would always be with me and never forgotten. So far it has worked perfectly, I have never been fishing without it. If you can't pick up a rod, you will never get to fish let alone get to the next level.

Good Fishing,

Take a Kid Fishing .... and at the end of the day when all are tired, burnt and cuddled up in rest mode on the sofa .... listen to them excitedly tellin' Mom all about "Their Day" :D
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.
