BrothA's Slippy and Senko Guru have a very hard time finding Yama-Lube that is affordable.

BrothA Slippy just paid $82 for 2.5 gallons in SJ area.

I have refilled his canister once about a month ago from Diablo Marine in Martinez. They sell it in bulk for $18.50 a gallon.

I "think" BrothA Gator burns Mercury Oil in his with no hitches.... but I could be wrong in what oil he burns :?:
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Jigs,
Never did an absolute day by day comparison, but here is my opinion based on my observations riding in my buddies boats and riding in mine, when we split costs.

I own a 225 Vmax on my skeeter. At high speeds (4K-WOT) it eats gas like no other; way faster than any of my friends who have a 225 Merc on their ranger.

At casual speeds(3-4K RPMs) i think they are pretty comparable, and probably come out about the same.

I learned this as much this year due to the high rising gas prices. Just can't afford to go zipping around at high speeds all day.

The Yamaha V-Max comes in different configurations depending on the model and the year. If you want to compare it to the Optimax, you need to look at the HPDI version. The V-Max come also as a carburetted version, which is much less fuel efficient (pay close attention to the older ones, as the are likely carb motors). Take a look at the Yamaha website and compare the performance bulletins from the 150 Vmax and the 150 Vmax HPDI.

Although the optimax is a direct-injection like the HPDI's, I'm not sure that it is a "high-pressure" motor like the HPDI's and E-tec's. Supposedly the opti's have great fuel efficiency, but I have never ran one. I have ran both the carburetted 150 Vmax and the 150 HPDI VMax. They are both excellent engines and very fast, but I would go for the gas mileage of a direct-injection motor without question. I am a big fan of the track record of reliability that Yamaha has shown, but that is just me...

Yammys are not star rated but I heard they are very reliable. As far as fuel consumption, the best thing you can do is slow down around 4500 rpm. You will notice a big difference. From my experience, the larger 2.5L and up motors are effiecient at this range.
