Spinning reels, costs!

Post by g-man »

just looking through a catalog, and looking at prices for spinning reels. Without naming brands who the hell would pay 3 to 5 hundred dollars for a spinning reel? I will, and have paid a hundred to two hundred, or more for a bait caster. But a spinning reel? I would not pay a hundred bucks for a spinning reel, and I'm not cheap with my gear, it sounds crazy to me!

I personally don't think that the higher end reels give you THAT much more than the mid grades....I spend $60-100 for a spinning reel.....have no problem spending 3 times that much for a baitcaster......of course they haven't made one as good at the Green Curado IMHO.

It all depends on your budget though. I say get what you like. After a long day on the water the better your equipment the less fatigue youll get. JMHO Jim

I'll add one more thing ... the weight of the reels and their contribution to the rod balance point is more important than JUST the reel or the rod.

I'll give you an example. The Dobyns 735C is a GREAT rod that is well balanced with a reel that weights a tad over 8oz. If you put one of those 5oz Steez reels on it, the rod is tip heavy and WILL wear you out during the course of a day.

Another example. I'm playing with a 7'MH Steez casting rod now. Though the rod by itself is very light. But even with that same 8.5oz reel on the rod, the rod still feels tip heavy. So again, if one were to put a light weight reel on that Steez rod ... it would not be a good match even though both the rod and the reel are light weight.

Bottom line ... there are applications where a light weight reel (and expensive at that) has it's place. But IMHO, the $500 Steez reels as well as others ... I've not found an application that works for me yet. That is especially the Steez spinning reel. I own two Steez spinning rods. But I've got TD-Sol 3000's on both to help with way the rod/reel balances in my hands. For casting setup, a light weight casting setup, I use a 7'M Techna AV casting rod with a Shimano Scorpion 1000MG ... I can rip all day with it and not wear me out!!

Yeah, that's a $500 setup ... but ... who said that bass fishing was cheap ... just ask the Ranger and Triton owners ... ~$100K for the boat and the truck; so what a few grand extra for rods and reels! :)

That said, one can get VERY nice equipment on the used market! Really no need to spend $500 on a rod when you can get one slightly used for a little more than 1/2 of that cost!

Last point ... there are fishermen and those who just collect fishing equipment! Case in point here. Note the comment on paint smudge on the reel foot. Does anyone really cares about the reel foot and what it looks like?! Obviously some one does!! :)

I have 6 Shimano Calais (2 CL200DC and 4 CL200A reels), 4 Stella STL2500FD and 2 Stella STL300FD Reels all with matching Loomis GLX and Specialty rods (GLX Senko,Bronzeback, etc). I got a great deal on them ($50) from a gal that was pissed at her cheatin' husband. She didn't want to take the $50, but I told her I'd feel guilty if I didn't offer her something. She also threw ina couple of his boxes of swimbaits ( 5 triple trouts, 11 huds, a couple shellcrackers and about 30 packs of basstrix and mission fish) She said it was the best way of getting back at him. Should I feel guilty about this great deal? :P

Did you see the Ito in 201Pro's post, man that was alot of dust on it!! thats gotta drop the value by like 10%

Truly there are those who want fancy equipment just cause its fancy, but as Gator said, there's still nothing better than a green cruado!

As for spinning reels, there are plenty of folks who depend more on spinning outfits than baitcasters, and there apparently is the market for that stuff, or else they still wouldn't be selling it. Really though, is that (brand unmentioned) $1000 setup any better than my $100 Curado 101B off ebay and my ~$115 Daiwa S flippin rod?!

Spinning reel wise, its tough to beat the ~$30 for a Abu Cardinal 103!

I agree G-Man my 80.00 (at the time) Dawia Theory is a great reel. I just dont get what the extra $$$ benefits. The only thing I am buying on a spinning reel is a drag system and some tolerances. The line release mechanism is the same on all of them once you open the bail the line falls off the spool....

What up G ?

LOL...

The way me and Fishfan Blow Up spinning reels, I could never see $300 bones either.

I stick to the Shimano Spirex series.$60 and yer in it with a pretty smooth reel to boot!

And since we each manage to EXPLODE several a year, I wouldnt even try to be like the "Weekend Warrior" with the Shiney New $400 Freak Show reel

Nuff Said!
