Can I Make Old Funky Jigs *NEW AGINE* ?

Post by Guy Kelley »

I was going through my tackle boxes the other day and came across a bunch of jigs that had been just sort of jumbled up together.

The skirting has become sort of matted together and some has curled up and twisted together.

I hate to throw em out is there some way to restore em ?

Same way with some of my spinner baits skirts !!

I think all are of a rubber or silicone type of material.

I think you can let them sit in distilled water for a bit and it will help.

Someone (I think John at Walton's Pond) told me to do this a few years ago, but I'm not positive it was him. It couldn't hurt to call his shop and ask though.

Hope this helps.

Try LURE CRAFT they have a wide varity of skirts and skirt materials as well as Viynal jig head paints. just google them and request a "FREE" Catalog. They also have alot of worm and other soft plastic molds for sale. We have poured 1,000s of worms in all shapes, colors, and sizes. LURE CRAFT is really cool if your interested in doing your own custom stuff!

Yes, you can restore them and it's very simple. The process will begin with cutting off the old skirts. Then,

1. Go to www.barlowstackle.com and order your choice of new skirts from a wide selection. Best value is ordering skirt layers rather than skirts already assembled with the rubber collars (it's the latter that get gummy and sticky and screw up the skirts).

2. While you're waiting for the skirts to arrive in the mail, go to a Home Depot, or a Lowe's, or an OSH or a Radio Shack and buy some 4 inch cable ties in black and white colors. They will be used in place of those terrible rubber collars.

3. When the skirt layers arrive, assemble them in color combinations you want and secure them to the jigs using the 4 inch cable ties. The latter will last forever. Key is keeping the little box on the cable tie on the outside or bottom of the hook so it doesn't reduce the bite of the hook.

You can restore a bunch of jigs in an evening while watching TV.

Sure. Jigs especially. If the hooks are good and the head isn't too beat, you can repaint them with powder paint or vinyl paint. The skirts can be tied with fine round rubber, or you could buy silicone skirts from several manufacturers. Barlows makes good silicone skirts, and Pepper Jigs sells their skirts in all there colors for their jigs and spinnerbaits. Many old baits can be revamped, no problem. The only problem with spinnerbaits is the wire, If its weakened or bent from use or storage, reworking one may not be worth it.
