HELP - HOW TO REPLACE A BILGE PUMP?????

Post by jtf408 »

First off, why in the world would they put the bilge pump under all sorts of heavy hoses and crap? It is so hard to get to, unless you are hanging from a harness from the cieling or if you really talented and can stand on your head.

Anyways, my bilge pump turns on. I can hear it make noise, but no water pumps out. I am assuming it will need to be replaced. I was able to get the cover off and look at it, and the only thing I am worried about is the wiring. All I saw was the wires going in the top of the unit. Do new bilge pumps come with insturctions?

Has anyone done this? Does it suck?

It's actually very simple to do once you are able to get to it by getting all the "crap" out of the way. But, you've gotta remember it's a tight area back there and they have to put it somewhere I guess.

The wiring is easy to do. Mine just unplugs . You may have to splice yours if it doesn't.........which is also simple to do. I think the first time I had to replace one of mine I had a little difficulty removing the pump out of the housing....until I finally figured you just have to turn it out of the housing........instead of trying to force it out!

Anyway, I also belive they come with instructions....mine did. Walmart carries them.

Brown is positive and black is negative. At least on a Mayfair, set-up.
It might be lonely at the Top, but it's a bitch, at the Bottom !

Disconnect the hose from the pump and try back flushing the hose with a garden hose..if no water comes out it will take a stiff wire to dislodge whatever is plugging it up.It was quite a job clearing mine,it was a mud dobbers nest just like concrete.
