True Bass, Dee, Brent & PFD's
Watched True Bass yesterday. Thought it was good that Dept of Boats & Waterways put up a commercial about wearing a PFD. Also thought it was cool that Brent said "lets put on our vests and go look for some fish" as they headed out. Thought it was not good that Brent didn't wear a vest while fishing.

Hi Jax it's Kent Brown.....I think you needed to turn your TV up but no big deal. I wanted respond to your post in regards to the PFD's in the True Bass show. As you saw we didn't start that motor without having our vests on and kill switch hooked up. This was filmed a week prior to the tragic loss of Kyle Clement on the Delta.
With that said I still think that the 100 mph style Stearns Triton Boats vest offers more protection than the inflatable style vests. They are a bit more cumbersome but they are my choice in vests. I wear it any time I am running the boat however I do not and don't have plans to begin wearing it while I am fishing. If I am fishing in very rough conditions, wind, waves etc I will put it on. Dee wears his at all times due to his medical conditions and size. He has a very limited lung capacity and would have a hard time if he needed to get back onboard the boat. He fished the entire day with an oxygen tank.
We are doing our best to promote the use of lifejackets and whatever type you choose wear it. I think that most bass anglers are not going to wear the jackets while fishing and getting them to put them on while running a boat will be a good start. Each of our tournament organizations only require that vests be worn while the gas motor is running......we did that and continue to do that any time my boat is on the water.
Glad you enjoyed the show!

I agree Kent. I dang near killed myself earlier this year (not wearing a PFD) while running. I've been running bassboats for a long time, so had Kyle Clement (at 25 years old but raised with a tournament fishing father). We both just had an accident. We both should of had vests on, I was lucky. I will not fish in one though. In severe conditions, I might, especially if I'm by myself. They are not confortable and are hot in the summer. Also, most bad accidents are under power of the big engine. YES, a guy could fall overboard and drown. It probably happens often. If I was not a good swimmer I'd always wear it. I think it is unrealistic to think most guys will fish in a PFD. If you do GREAT, my hats off to you. I just hope because of both accidents, anglers THINK about wearing PFD's and kill switches. It really could happen to you. Two things, I was the most guilty of thinking it would never happen to me. I was the worst about not wearing a vest. If anyone considers my preaching "two faced", remember I seen the light. I hope we do not lose anyone else. Also, Kyle Clement was an outstanding young man and was raised and loved by a great family. I really believe if given the chance, he would ask everyone to PLEASE WEAR YOUR VESTS. I promise one day someone will have an accident and thank Kyle for them wearing their vest.

Gary, because of your accident, I decided to start wearing my SOS vest while fishing. I have made two all day trips with it on ( I wear a white t shirt under it) and I have become so used to it that when I was holding the boat and waiting for the trailer, I discovered I still had it on. I said, what the heck, I will just keep it on until the boat is loaded and I am off of the water, dock included.
I know for a fact that at age 70, I could not get back in the boat if I fell out even though I consider myself a first class swimmer and skin diver. What I used to be and what I am now are two different things so I am through temping fate.
I liked that show with Dee, Kent. Good job, as usual.

Unless you swim daily or at least once a week, you should never consider yourself a good or strong swimmer..Swimming just like any other sport requires practice to be good at it..Sure under pretty much ideal circumstances you can probably swim well enough to make the shore from most places you fish on the Delta, and no doubt some of you younger fishermen/women could make it to shore from the middle of a lot of our lakes..The catch is when you end up in the water it is probably not going to be ideal circumstances..I know for a fact that I can easily float in a pool for thirty minutes or longer, but the water in the Delta is not a pool..Without a lifejacket on or some other help I doubt I could last much over 5 minutes there..For those of you that have never retrieved a body from the water, it is an experience you can well do without..Those of us that have lost friends and/or relatives from drowning accidents it is a circumstance that you do not want anyone else to have to go through..True, you may still perish even with a PFD on, but your chance of survival is increased many fold..Wear them when running at the absolute minimum..

Brent and Gary,
I can see where you're coming from, but like Barry and Mac, I have to agree that wearing a vest all the time is very important to me. Increasing age and physical condition has affected my balance to the point where I'm not comfortable on my boat without wearing a vest. As careful as I am, I'm still fearful of going overboard.

Jax I totally get it and if you feel more comfortable with one on at all times there are some great ones out there that will suit you very well. The most important thing is not to have it stowed.
I was just responding to your post as I felt I was spreading the word for wearing the life jacket every time we started the boat and put it in gear.
Good Luck

Re: True Bass, Dee, Brent & PFD's
Because of what happend to Gary and a guy Ryan German, I always wear mine. Heck at the FLW NG tourny, I wore it up to the holding tanks before I noticed that I had it on. I will always wear one while the big motor is running and fishing also. I used to be in good shape, but at 39 and a motocoss injury to my leg and ankle, not so good. Plus my wife will give me crap about it, and I just dont want to hear it. lol I liked the True Bass show. Its one set up on my DVR.
True Bass Question
Is Brent Krown now producing True Bass? Just wondering since Justin Wolfe is no longer doing the production, and Kent's face time has gone up in the show. Not a complaint, just curious.

Thanks Brent and larry , very informative
Re: True Bass, Dee, Brent & PFD's
No guys Phil Clark is the producer of the show. I have been getting much more air time with the new show but only because my boat looks good on air....I still have a face for radio
Dee is an old friend and I wanted to do that show with him...I think it turned out pretty good and I am happy with it. I did the show with Dobyns because I needed to carry the show...he could catch them but camera's scare the hell out of him
oh and look what old Uno Andrews started here!!!!
Uno.......oh that's one too many
