Sacramento wastewater discharge below Freeport?...An...
article appeared today in the Contra Costa Times about this subject and the affects it might be having on the food chain...I mentioned this subject to a commercial clammer last year as we were driving up to an area above Freeport...Mentioned treated wastewater is dumped into the river just below Freeport... Wondered how that might afffect the fish traveling through that stretch?...Hard to find any freshwater clams from Isleton to Freeport of any size...Hmmm?...

Here's the article from the Sacramento Bee:
http://www.sacbee.com/101/story/979721.html
The wastewater contains ammonia and has a major impact on the food chain in the Delta. Of course, any impact to the food chain impacts the fish population.
Here's a quote from the article
"After years of searching high and low for a culprit in the collapse of Delta fish populations, scientists are learning the problem may lie right under their noses.
The likely fish killer is ammonia, a common byproduct of human urine and feces.
Sacramento's regional sewage treatment plant is the largest single source of ammonia in the Delta. It discharges treated wastewater from nearly 1.4 million people into the Sacramento River near Freeport – without removing ammonia.
Two recent studies by Richard Dugdale, an oceanographer at San Francisco State University, show that ammonia disrupts the food chain in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta......"

So its been finally proven that BS is not the only thing that flows out of our Capital City !?
I read the article this morning and what got me was how the wast water district Manager was more worried about how the 1 billion dollar fix would jack ever ones rates up the $60.00's per billing cycle.
They are planning a huge expansion of the system due to population growth with no fix of the present ammonia problem, and have been dumping it for years.
Next time you drink a glass of water down stream of Sacramento think about what you are swallowing. Someones pee from Sacramento County.
Hey its cool though, after all it could be Arnold's !!!

Re: OH NO!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone knows the problems in the Delta are due to the South Delta pumps. Don't bring up anything else.

......And the new Diversion proposal bypassng around the "North Delta" will keep our "Clean Water" where it is supposed to be .... In the Delta... and ensure our best stuff for So-Cal.

-- First thing on the news radio on the way home- "Expected cost to clean up the NH3 is about a billion dollars"
..... Idiots- They can't clean up/remove Ammonia unless they remove the soil where it has settled -- and leaches out from when stirred Causing and an EXPLOSION of NH3 contaimantes more into the water system.
It's not rocket Science -- It's Waste water treatment 101 and the Goverment turning a blind eye upon certain govet. agencies - while they are extra stringent on others that have/had deep pockets.

Don't worry, those pumps aren't forgotten and it has been proven that they are screwin things up too!!!! Its all part of the problem..
Re: And where is the proof?**NM*
In the ground up fish parts on the up side of the pumps!

Re: And where is the proof?**NM*
Jimmy -- You mean to tell me that all this time they they did not just test for Mercury to inform the Public on Gold Mining Remants from the 1800's ......and peform fish/crab counts?
I bet the next thing you are gona tell us that they test for Selinium, Nickel, and "a slough full of others that don't matter" as well and never released that data to the Public.

Personally, I am just about done with government officials who make big blunders like this, cause inconvenience to the public, kill the jobs of average taxpayers like the salmon fisherman, and then ask for more tax money to fix their mistakes.
If it's going to cost a Billion dollars to fix the ammonia problem, I vote that we pass a Proposition to fund the repairs by reducing the wages of all Sewage Treatment/Water Resources/Environmental Protection state government employees by 5%, and sending the money directly to the project.
I think it's time we held the clowns accountable.

It's too bad that the news papers and media do not report how researchers are paid. In some cases, studies are paid for with grants. Grants are not given unless there is a "perceived" problem. Researchers provide useful information, but in some cases, there is no future grant money unless they discover a problem. If you want to look at grants for the lab involved with the ammonia studies in the delta, see page 51-55 of the following document:
http://rtc.sfsu.edu/documents/RTC.RSO.1 ... w.2005.pdf
There's also no law that says that the labs cannot be influenced by people or companies that stand to gain from particular conclusions.
Sorry, I'm a skeptic. There are too many other factors that are more detrimental to delta fish populations in my opinion.
