Question about DVL....got the boot for 30 days

Post by BigWave »

Fished the lower river on Friday and had a great trip. Saturday afternoon (yesterday) I washed the boat (07 PT 175 Tracker) thoroughly which includes entire hull and always a hoseout of the livewell with clean fresh water.
Show up this morning at DVL and when she does the livewell inspection there was a small amount of water still in the corner. She tells me that we cant fish today. I asked if I could towel it out and she said absolutely not. OK, no problem and I understand the importance of them not wanting invasive organisms in the lake. She then let me know that I could not return to the lake for 30 days. This I do not understand. How many folks out there fish tournaments from week to week and fill their livewell up with one lakes water, dump it, clean it out then fish DVL the next days or week, etc? Whats the difference in that and what I had happen today other than my dumb butt just forgot to dry my livewell out? I guess I just dont understand the 30 day deal. Any input?

Thanks guys!

Sucks, but the mantra is now CLEAN and DRY, period. You're actually lucky, or lied on the affidavit, as there is a 7 day dry-dock requirement for those boats that have been on infested waterways:
All vessels used in a contaminated waterbody for less than 24 hours must remain out of any waterbody and dry for 7 consecutive days prior to launching at Diamond Valley Lake. (excerpt from the DVL policies listed at http://www.dvmarina.com/links.html)
That may have factored into the duration of your quarantine... not sure from your post.

Oh, and to the second part of your post... the tournament guys are extremely diligent in cleaning out their holds and ensuring that their livewells are thoroughly clean and dry also, else they know they will likely be turned away.

I myself have resorted to (above and beyond the usual cleaning and draining) leaving the plug out until the inspection is complete, and stuffing a couple of handful of towels into my livewells in between trips, just in case I get a little mystery leakage.

Sucks, but it is what we need to do these days to get out on the water.

Wow......ok. We actually never got to any questions as I was waiting for her at the livewell and only explained to her that I had just washed it yesterday. Thats as far as we went. We havent been to DVL in quite a while. Next time, oh in say 30 days or more  I'll know better! My bad. Thanks for those links.

Even sweeter is there putting a paper band on your bow and trailer to identify thats the last lake you fished so next time in you don't have to go through inspections. Just got mine today what a great idea and it don't cost 50 bucks. Hopefully there willbe someone there to put one on after the night derbies it should speed up the line some

I saw that Hippie said he fishes DVL out of an old Ranger with a Merc EFI. I too have a older boat with a Merc EFI, but I understood that it was not allowed on DVL since it is not direct ignition.

What's the straight skinny? Please tell me I've been misinformed...my brother, a non fisherman, lives in Hemit and I soooo want to fish DVL.

Doesn't the water in DVL come from the River anyway? How did the stripers get in there? Is there some sort of magic screen that filters out the qugga's? This whole mess is just a runaway train that has no ending.

No, they stopped taking River water when the invasives were first discovered, quite a long time ago. Search Mike Guisti's posts and you can see the definitive responses.

EDIT: However, he did state that they were (probably) going to have to start taking River water around September, if I recall correctly, so it may indeed be a moot point.

Exactly!!!
Does anyone TRULY belive there isn't any of these worldwide travelers already in DVL or just about any other body of water that allows or has allowed boats of any kind on them? I don't mean to sound like a pesimist but lets face the facts. These little pests have made it all the way from Euorpe without a ticket or passport and seem hell bent on becoming a citizen no matter if we like it or not.

Um, yeah. Given their rate of reproduction, and presuming that there isn't some big conspiracy at work here involving people like Mike Guisti (who I personally trust implicitly) making false claims about the inspection results, the population at DVL would be readily-apparent by this point. I do believe that the DFG and water management boards, through their inspections, have a very firm handle on exactly where they exist and where they don't at this point, and that the DFG tracking is accurate.

I also believe that it is inevitable and that they have only been delaying the introduction. The spread West has been unstopable by a great many bright individuals along the way, so I have little expectation that a miracle will occur out here.

Been a while buddy. I think if the lake is fed from the CO river or if the lake has House Boats setting on it and being delivered from all around then yes, its time has probably come.

MOST bass boats are out of the water sitting in heat and wiped down well, given that I would think the tag along quagga mussels wouldnt have much of a chance. But boats that are setting in Lake Erie then purchased and dumped into Shasta, Mead etc... then your right its just a matter of time.
