Water pressure questions on 175 opti max

Post by Bill kizer »

1. What should the water pressure be at idle using a hose with attachment? I have a nice pee stream as well as water coming out through the prop.

2. With motor in neutral at 2000 Rpms the warning horn comes on with 8 pounds of pressure. Is this normal?

3. With motor in gear the horn does not come on when I bump the throttle to as high as 3000 RPM's.

4. How much water should come out of the square hole above the pee stream?

Your opti will give you a warning buzzer if you try to rev it up in neutral, anytime! Its not a water presure alarm.

The reason for my questions arose from my last Trip. I picked up lots of weeds and I think I sucked some into the motor.

On the lake any time I went above 3000 RPM's the warning horn came on. It appeared like I had low water pressure also.

Bill, did ya call Mike over at Cap City Marine. For this issue he could probably get you in real quick. Phil is the best Merc Tech in NorCal bar none and will have this issue resloved with minimal time and expense.

You were stupid to sign any such contract unless the motor was free. You should be able to take it to ANY certified Mercury service center. Outside of that, you got ripped on that one.

CHeck the main oil resevoir as well as the small internal reserve resevior under the cowling. If either is low an alarm will sound. The internal one is a small flask-like container. If there is an air bubble or low oil it will sound and you should add oil. It could be something totally different, but this is what happened to me last year. If all else fails take it to a certified Merc shop w/ a computer to run it.

Check the oil reservior like Buddy Brown mention....

How to: take the cap off and turn the ignition key to on but don't start the engine. By turning the key the reservior should fill up. What is happening MAYBE is that your running the oil to low in the Main Reservior.

I have been told it's a big no no to rev the engine in neutral on the hose!! It should be idled on the hose only.
