Boater Brawl Ends in Stockton Marina Death

Post by Burke »

From News10.net. Another crazy story involving people, boats, and alcohol.

STOCKTON, CA - One person died and another was hospitalized after a fight broke out between groups of boaters at a popular Stockton marina, according to Stockton police.

The altercation began around 9:15 p.m. Saturday at the Buckley Cove Marina in Stockton, Stockton Police spokesman Pete Smith said.

Smith said two groups began arguing as they were taking their boats out of the marina. During the fight, one person was apparently run over while a boat was being towed out of the water. The victim was taken to St. Josephs Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries, Smith said.

The injury allegedly prompted one of the combatants, David Mora to get into his car and drive into the opposing group. One person was hit by the car and pronounced dead a short time later.

Mora was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail facing homicide charges.

Smith said no one else involved in the fight were expected to be charged. Investigators said alcohol appeared to be a factor in the fight.

This is the kind of stuff that has turned me into a mid-week angler during this time of year. Tragic stuff indeed.

We had a discussion about this type of behavior a while back and someone on the forum was adamant that you confront people when they take advantage at the ramps or on the water. Here's the result of confrontation. No-one wins.

Greg,
I totally agree. It's a classic case of someone letting their anger dictate their actions without thinking of the consequences.

The person who got run over, while injured, is going to live, and survive; but the idiot who reacted to that and slammed his vehicle into the others now is facing a long time in jail, and another person is dead. All because of uncontrollable rage!

Stupid!

I wonder if we'll ever be able to get people to take parenting seriously again.

I just cant wait till November through March again, this summer has been a crazy one on the river. Good thing about cockroaches and lice is they dont like the cold

I still am always amazed that there is not more of this because you can see a group of guys drive down the river and everyone has a beer in there hand besides the driver and then you see the same boat an hour later with everyone in the boat drinking a beer besides the driver except someone new is driving the boat.

A lot of folks still take parenting seriously. In this day and age parents have a lot more working against them then when my parents were raising me and my siblings. And the divide between generations has grown dramatically as well. Also, what makes up 'the family unit' is largely very different then when I was my kids age. All are contributing factors.

What seems to me to be missing most is a respect for others, their differences and most of all, a measure of patience to that end.

Of course you are correct, but I see so many parents acting out in front of their children today, cursing and swearing and breaking laws. Something I never saw in my youth. I also see good parents but the ratio is out of whack.

Long story short, it's not worth it.

I live with pain and a loss of memory everyday because of some moron and a sucker punch at the ramp.

Just let them go, we'll have the water back soon enough.

Man, just think about how crazy this is, 2 guys that are lucky enough to have a boat and buy gas and take it out and have a ball, the next thing you know you are a murderer or you are dead.

This could have happened to a sober person but I would doubt it very much. Now people not under the influence of drugs and alcohol kill people all the time but come on, the odds go way way up when you add it. Alcohol and any type of moving, steering motorized objects do not mix.

Some people think this is just a water skeir/wake boater thing, but I happen to know for a fact that both fisherman and skiers do it, I have both a ski boat and a bass boat, no alcohol allowed in either one.

If a Ranger wants to look inside an ice chest that's great, maybe he will keep someone from killing me or one of my kids!!

Just me 02.!!

Sadly, alcohol isn't prohibited in boats.

When I launch at Ladds, I get on the water at first light, do my fishing thing, and get out by 11:00. Mixing it up with a bunch of drunks at the ramp is not my idea of fun. There used to be a security guard to keep things halfway under control. Sounds like they need SWAT now.

Wow that's pretty sad for sure.I have seen some altercation's at Ramp's but to go that far is just horrible.

And I'm sure Alchohol was the main reason for it to go that far. What could possibly be that bad you would get in a fight over pulling your boat out of the water.

I like a POP to you just have to know when and when not to and any power driven machine is not the time.

Very sad . There was another incident last week that I saw no mention of .My co-worker's buddy was killed at Lost Isle (apparantly , as I was told, and not there) , and another still in critical condition after a stabbing. No doubt alcohol fueled.I was shocked last week that this sort of thing took place where most of us go to find peace , and now this.
