Rain Gear

Post by ragtopped »

Im getting ready to buy some rain gear and was wondering about the Cabelas Guide Wear or the Bass Pro 100mph. Or any other brands I should check into. Im 6ft and 220pds. 30inseam 36waist. I was wondering about what sizes I would be. Large bibs and XL parka I guess. Any info on which is better and why. Thank you

I've got the BPS 100MPH suit, and love it. The Guide Wear is also very highly recommended, so I don't think you would go wrong either way.

Best investment I ever made at BPS was purchasing that Pro-Qualifier Jacket & Bibs. About 20 years ago I purchased their top line Gortex 10x suit and got 18 years of service out of that rain gear. I use it as a back up today for clients. Two years ago I broke down and invested in the Pro-Qualifier gear, a whole nother world of comfort and protection while out in the eliments fishing!

I'm 6'1" and around 195Lbs. and own the Cabelas GuideWear. I've had it for a few seasons and really like it. I went with the shorter length jacket instead of the longer parka. I also like their bibs better than BPS because the come up a bit higher in the front and back as opposed to being more like pants with suspenders attached. The Cabelas bib & jacket combo really keeps the warmth in nicely and allows for easy mobility while fishing. I've been in some nasty storms with this stuff and the Goretex holds up awesome in wet weather.

I'd go with a reg or tall jacket and regular bib because a tall bib would probably be too long(remember...they're adjustable).

A good investment for your $$$...just my .02

Uhm, not sure which bibs you've seen, but if mine were any higher they'd cover my face! Mine are definitely not pants with suspenders. Worked really well for me for the WON Shasta event last year.

All good stuff as I said.

BPS 100 mph vs Guidewear - I own guide wear never had any issues LOVE THEM. They were my first purchase of anything fishing related when I moved up to NorCal.

With that being said I have never heard anyone with BPS say a darn thing bad about them either - so both brands are a good purchase.

I will say I bought the non insulated Guidewear jacket and bibs, I throw on a pair of fleece pants and jacket and I am TOO warm in these things even in the winter!

My tournament partner has BPS and I have Guide Wear, you can't go wrong with either. When I bought mine 2 years ago the Guide Wear was a little cheaper.

Anybody have anything to say about the Mustang Integrity bibs and jackets? Expensive yes. Just curious. I'm looking for something not as bulky, but will still get the job(dry and warm) done. More of a finesse outfit for better movement. D.B.COOPER 8)

I bought GuideWear this past summer and am absolutly loving them. I bought last years parka and this years bibs as last years bibs were very difficult to get on and off, due to the velcro (you can hang a truck with that stuff). Being out here on the East Coast, the weather is def not west coast and have spent time on the lake using it all day since I got here in Aug.

I have tried the BPS (a friend) and I like the GW best, the velco is top of the line and after a few trips the rigid feels goes away...the cuffs on the GW is top notch as well, at 75 and rain not a drop got up my sleeves....best $$$ i ever spent...cant wait to ice fish in this stuff....

Both are good and going to offer similar protection from the elements. What it comes down to are the features of each one. For me I prefer the Guidewear hood over the BPS hood as it's an integrated style hood. Aside from that they are very similar.

Here's a tip. Some Cabela stores have in-store bargain caves. I bought a new set of Guidewear at the store in KS while I was there on business for just over $200. It was a return never worn - bad fit it said. Anyways if you're in the area of one of their stores it pays to checkout the bargain cave!

If you want to look cool spend 3 to 5 hundred bucks on the 100mph. If you want dry spend 100 on carhart PVC. It has neoprean cuffs and wont leak ever. Then go to good will or an army surplus store and get a set of wool austrian or german WW2 stuff for about 10 bucks. Gortex breathable is great, but I have had the best and it always leaks when it gets really bad. You cant go wrong with a rubber suit, even if you look like a nazi.

I have the bps Gore-tex gear its very light and you can dress to the weather underneath as conditions change so can you.
If its really cold a good pair of long underwear and a layer of fleece will keep you warm and you can still move!!!
Ive yet to get wet through my gore-tex but i can tell you i had a backseater with frog togs ask me to take him back on a nasty day on C.L. and with this combo the rain/cold actually felt good!!

Guidewear parka jacket - parka covers more of my big biscuit and keeps wind out vs a jacket. great windblocking parka, love the inside cuffs.

Tried the Guidewear bibs, both insulated and uninsulated, but wasn't happy with the fit of either. Ended up with the Cabelas "Dry-plus Signature Series Bibs" and they are money for both performance and fit. Much lighter fabric vs the Guidewear but still wear really nice and have been tested in cold hard driving sideways rain last winter near Mildred. I think they are a steal at only $90.

ragtopped,
I am so glad to hear you are not going "cheap" and being wise to invest in something that will pay off so many times.

without a doubt, as everyone is atesting to, you cant really go wrong with either 100 MPH BPS or Cabelas Guidewear. Both are excellent.

I have always had guidewear, and love it. I am tall and lanky and find that the parka is just too long, so i just use the regular jacket.

One feature that i really love with my old suit that isnt on my new suit is a fully lined neck and face area. i think its fleece lined. the old stuff has it, but the new version doesnt. not sure why. If you can find that, its well worth it. without it, the inner area rubs hard on your stubbly, cold, face.

Enjoy,

Thanks for all the input. I like the BPS100. I was just wondering about what sizes I would be. Maybe a large bib with xl parka. I have short legs 30inseam and 36 waist

That would be a really good suggestion. I would have probably gotten my bibs a size smaller had I done that, but they still work great with all the layers.

dont do this!

Post by kopper_bass »

Yeah, dont do like i did. I ended up ordering and sending stuff back 3 times with Cabelas.

I tried to be smart and do the old girl web shopping thing (yeah, yeah, i know). I ordered a bunch of jackets, parkas and bibs, in different colors & sizes, knowing i would get the best match/fit, and then just send all the rest back for a refund.

Well, i only kept 1 pr of pants, but had to send all the jackets back and re-order aMedium jacket; a size i didnt try. DOH!

Then, in my haste to do that, i ordered the wrong darn color of Medium jacket, so i had to send it back again, and get the correct color to match my pants i had already kept. 2X DOH!

Needless to say, i spent lots of extra cash on shipping that i shouldnt have.

Save your money, wait for Manteca to open, and go try the stuff on. :D :D

Gotta again say .... For $35 you can get the Kirkland/Stearns pants and jacket set from Costco.

Costco now even has "underware" ~~ (version of Under Armor for alot less monies) for $19 tops and $17 bottoms.

Layer with Thermos, outer clothing as needed for more warmth ..... and accessorise with fingerless wool gloves from Walmart -- Good to go !

DeltaLuke, DeltaJack and I do need to look into some face mask of some sorts for this winter though now. -- Might just see if I can aford two mask of some sorts -- and get another wool one piece hoody for myself again.

I have the costco set and we got caught in a rainstorm this summer that made the costo kirkland raingear weep, literally.

It works for lighter rain but for those heavy rains I would look elsewhere. Yes I am in Seattle

North Face, expensive, but never a problem, even when its snowing. Heavy rain? Water offa ducks back..light, comfortable, breathable, fishable, worth it. Partner uses BPS 100+, never heard a complaint from him either.

I wear all snowboarding gear. I own a 686 jacket and Burton bibs. They keep me as dry as any rain gear out there and they are very flexible. I have been up in the mountains in -5 degrees and it kept me plenty warm. I paid $365 for my set. But the prices can raise and decrease depending on what brand and style you by.

My Cabelas Guidewear has lasted over Ten years now. They are by far one of the best investments I have made in my fishing gear/apparell.
Nothing fun about being wet, cold and uncomfortable all day when you could be dry and fishing.
Nice on those long winter month rides if'n your a passenger in a single console too.
