question on locker bar?

Post by veroscop »

Is it worth my trouble to have a locker bar installed? do they even work. the four bolts into the bolts seem very easy to remove. How difficult is it to install.. any info thanks

I have one and like it. I know that thieves have cut them out with a sawzall and used the trailer winch to tear them out but both make lots of noise and I figure most tweekers don't want to mess with that. Mine has machine screws and nuts so they don't back out. I did not install but it looks simple other than cutting the stainless pipe to the correct length.

I made my own for about 40 bucks. I went to Home Depot and picked up a stick of 1/2" IMC and a stick of 3/4 IMC electrical conduit. The 1/2" will slide into the 3/4 and it's galvanized so no rust. I also picked up a strip of flat aluminum that was 24" long by 2" wide. Cut 2 Aluminum brackets and drill the holes with a hole saw. Layout where you want the bar and drill the holes in the boat. :? I coated the inside of the holed in the boat with a marine grade silicone to seal it. Instead of screws I rivited the brackets into the boat.

I made the bars extend about 4" into the boat on each side. It'll be harder to rip it out that way. If they tried the sawzall trick they would have to cut the deck in half 8) I'll send you a pick if you like.

Easy to install with a hole saw. Even if the bolts were removed the brackets are recessed into the gunnel, so it would have to be cut or pulled out with a winch of some sort. I like mine. A little piece of mind when on the road for those quick stops. It keeps the lazy thieves moving on.

It helps you sleep at night, but still have good insurance! I think it keeps the honest people honest. Look, if there is a boat with-out one, go there first, please. Brant @ Marine unlimited installs them fast/cheap, and the right way. Go there or call first for a quote. Well worth the money...<><...Steve@thefishook.com

Try Phillip's Locker Bar. It cost a little more but well worth it. It looks better then the other also. It will not bend and I do not know of anyones boat that was broke into with his locker bar. Just my 2 cents

When I bought my used Ranger 520, I was told it came with the Phil's Locker bar on the rear. Even though the front had the mounts, the previous owner took the front bar with him. I asked how much the front would cost. When I heard the price, I thought the guys @ Angler's Marine were crazy. Bar was pretty expensive compared to the 'Lockerbar'.

Drove down to pick up the boat & saw the Phil's bar. Holy Cow! This thing is way beefy compared to the 'Lockerbar'. Purchased the front bar right then & there.

I did a search to see what a locker bar was. I'm guessing this is it:
http://www.locrbar.com/

My older Skeeter, an '87, has rod lockers too small for my rods, so I don't put them in it until just before launching, but if I had a newer boat I'd sure get one.

All I need to get into the money would be the four I usually get along with a 20# kicker.

It is like having an ADT security sign in front of your house. If they really want into your boat/house, they can, but the house next to yours is easier.

The locker bar isn't easy to get around. If someone does decide that they want what you have, it won't stop them, but it make it a little easier and likely, they will go to the next boat.

As stated, locks and locker bars are primarily to keep honest people honest..All the do for the dishonest is slow them down, thereby providing some amount of deterence..Common sense says you are better with one than without..

vero,
Just ask the guys up at Clear Lake that get ripped off during a big tourney each year while at Konocti Resort (not the casino). It happens almost every year. Every time there's a big tourney (FLW, Stren, WON, etc) there's 7 guys standing at the docks in the morning swearing and cussing because someone got into their boat and stole this or that.

Not a single one is a guy with a locker bar! NONE!

The chicken crap thieves just go down the row of boats and grab all the stuff they can from the easiest boats they can.

Get a bar!

Jeff,
Was wondering what that Philips Bar is since its different than the lock=r-bar.

Because i have a rectanglular, solid, heavy bar on my Skeeter that came from SoCal, and i want to find the same for any new boat i get. But the phone number i have for the manuf. doesnt seem to be valid.

Is this the same bar?
Do you have any contact info for Philips bar?

Thanks,

I don't see anything special about the loc r bar. A set of bolt cutters would do the trick.
