Position Error is the max distance that you could be from your intended or current waypoint. Based on GPS Antenna signal to tracking satellites. Can be affected by speed of movement, update rate, mounting area/method on boat, surrounding terrain, military usage. Its basically how accurate your current position is. If you have a rockpile at ClearLake marked that is only say 20X15' and your Position Error is 25ft then you might not land right back on it without a little searching around again. Mine is reading about 24ft. Just tryin to see who is getting more accurate readings and the reason why or why not.

Thanks,

Charley

Charley the accuracy is basically dependent on the number of satalites being used and the sensitivity of your individual equipment..Most are good to about 9 meters (just over 27 feet)..I don't think any of them has much greater accuracy over time..I had a handheld Garmin that every once in a blue moon would say it was accurate to within 8 feet..It seemed strange the first time I saw it as it indicated I was on dry land when in fact I was in the middle of Dutch..

There used to be a restriction as to how accurate civilian GPS units could be, but that was lifted some time back. The new units are pretty darn accurate. I've got several waypoints marked at Casitas that were small stumps, rocks and the old oak tree, and could navigate directly to them on the money. I have antennas at each of my transducer locations, including up on my trolling motor bracket, so that my marked waypoints are as accurate as possible... set a waypoint with the antenna and xducer off the stern, and try to get on it with the trolling motor xducer and you have a significant variance to overcome.
