Toray Braid with Flourocarbon leader a no knot

I was at the ISE show Friday and Rob Riehl was using Toray Braid with a section of fluorocarbon on the end, but there was no knot connecting the two. I had to leave before he was done so I didn't get to ask about it.

Is this a new product from Toray where the braid is fused to a fluorocarbon leader or did Rob do it himself someway without using a knot?

Toray came out with a hollow braid, like a miniature tube that your flouro could fit through. Your suppose to pinch the end down so it won't move. Manny at the Bait Barn has it and could show you personally how to set it up. www.baitbarn.net

Been doing that for years on the salt with the Line One hollow braid. Rigging is a bit time consuming, and I can expect even moreso with the smaller diameters as I typically use it with 65# braid and 30-40# flourocarbon leader at a minimum, but it works when done right.

I don't think it is worth it personally for freshwater applications... braid to flourocarbon using the uni-to-uni knot has worked great for me for three years now.

It's not a new technique--most people have been doing that style of splicing with Jerry Brown hollow Spectra for years. It works on the same principle as Chinese finger handcuffs. You'll need to get a set of needles if you're going to try it. Check with your local long range shop...

Jerry Brown = Line One... in addition to needing the needles, you'll also need the glue, and possibly also some thin floss or thread (probably size A wrapping thread or similar) for seizing the splice with a chinese puzzle.

Roger, How long of a leader are you throwing in the fresh? Is this for light applications like 8 or 10 pound braid?

Robert, I've been using braid with a flouro leader for three years now on my spinning gear. I use 10# Power Pro or Spiderwire Stealth braid, and attach anywhere from 4# - 12# flouro leaders. I usually use about three pulls (yards) of leader, so I can cut and re-tie as needed without having to resplice. Works great.
